Cold Wave Alert in 23 Madhya Pradesh Districts as Temperatures Dip Below 10°C; Schools in Dewas to Start Late

Madhya Pradesh is witnessing an early and sharp onset of winter this year, with minimum temperatures plummeting below 10°C in 11 cities on Monday night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cold wave alert for the next four days across 23 districts, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Gwalior.

Dense morning fog has begun to blanket several regions, while icy winds continue to sweep through both western and eastern parts of the state. Initially confined to districts such as Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, and Narmadapuram, the cold has now spread to Jabalpur, Rewa, Sagar, and Shahdol.

According to IMD data, Jabalpur recorded the season’s coldest night at 9.7°C, while Bhopal and Indore dipped to 8.3°C and 8.4°C respectively. Rajgarh remained the coldest location in the state with 8°C, followed by Naugaon-Umaria at 8.5°C and Rewa at 9.2°C.

The sharp temperature drop has prompted administrative measures in some areas. In Dewas, Collector Rituraj Singh has ordered all schools—from nursery to class 12—to begin after 10 a.m. The directive applies to government, private, CBSE, and other affiliated institutions to safeguard students from health issues linked to the cold.

Interestingly, several Madhya Pradesh cities are currently colder than hill stations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, including Shimla and Mussoorie. Indore has logged its coldest November in 25 years, with temperatures touching 7°C, while Bhopal has broken a decade-long record at 8°C.

Meteorologists attribute the chill to strong northwesterly winds and recent rainfall that cooled ground temperatures. Forecasts suggest another spell of cold and possible rain in the coming weeks due to active western disturbances, particularly affecting Bhopal, Indore, and Jabalpur.
