Police in Bhopal have arrested a man accused of raping a Class 11 student, filming the assault to blackmail her for money, and pressuring her to convert her religion.
The accused, identified as Osaf Ali Khan, was taken into custody by officers from Kohefiza police station after the minor girl filed a complaint with support from her family and local community members. An FIR has been registered against him under relevant sections of the law, including provisions dealing with rape of a minor, extortion, criminal intimidation, and related offences.
According to police, the incident dates back to July last year. Khan, who frequently visited the vicinity of a prominent school in Shahpura to meet a friend of the victim, used that connection to befriend the girl. He later invited her for a drive around the city on the pretext of sightseeing and took her to an isolated spot in Khanugaon area.
There, inside his car, he allegedly raped her. When she resisted, he pacified her with false promises of marriage. Unbeknown to her, he recorded an obscene video of the act on his mobile phone.
In the following months, Khan exploited the footage to demand ₹1 lakh, threatening to make the video public and ruin her reputation. Terrified, the student managed to arrange and pay him ₹40,000. Despite the payment, he continued to harass her, insisting on repeated sexual encounters.
When she blocked him on social media and her phone, he persisted by calling from different numbers. Eventually, he shared the video with some of her friends, escalating her distress.
The girl, unable to bear the ongoing trauma, confided in her cousin brother. With assistance from him and members of a local Hindu organisation, she approached the police to register the complaint.
Investigating officer TI Krishna Gopal Shukla of Kohefiza station confirmed that the victim also alleged Khan had pressured her to convert her religion after promising marriage. She was reportedly forced to recite certain religious prayers under duress on multiple occasions.
Police have seized the accused's mobile phone, which is now slated for forensic examination to recover the video and other digital evidence.
The case has shocked the local community, highlighting vulnerabilities faced by young students in urban settings. Authorities are probing whether similar patterns exist in other instances. The survivor is receiving counselling support, and police have assured a thorough and swift investigation.
Senior officers said the accused remains in custody, and further charges may be added based on forensic findings.
