CM Yadav Orders Removal of IAS Santosh Verma, Recommends Dismissal to Centre After Controversial Remarks Trigger Statewide Protests

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has ordered the removal of IAS officer Santosh Kumar Verma from the Agriculture Department and directed the General Administration Department (GAD) to forward a proposal to the Central Government seeking his dismissal from service. The decision follows widespread outrage over Verma’s recent comments on the High Court and “Brahmin daughters,” which prompted statewide protests.
The move was finalised during a late-night meeting at the Chief Minister’s Office on Wednesday. Verma has been shifted to the GAD pool, leaving him without a department or official duties, and a chargesheet will be issued against him as part of disciplinary proceedings.
According to the GAD’s report, Verma is accused of securing his IAS promotion through forged and fabricated documents, with multiple criminal cases pending against him. His promotion has already been described as “wrong and illegal,” and a departmental inquiry related to allegations of acquiring an integrity certificate using false documents is nearing completion. Officials say his replies have been “unsatisfactory,” and the Chief Minister stated that retaining him in service would be “against administrative discipline.”
The controversy escalated after two videos of Verma surfaced. In one, he stated at an AJAKS event that “reservation should continue until a Brahmin donates his daughter to my son,” a remark that drew severe backlash from Brahmin organisations. In another, he accused the High Court of deliberately obstructing ST-category candidates from becoming civil judges.
Protests intensified across the state, including in Bhopal, where community groups, political parties, and civil outfits demanded immediate action. Effigies of Verma were burnt in several districts, and Brahmin organisations had announced plans to gherao the Chief Minister’s residence on December 14 over the government’s earlier inaction.
With the dismissal proposal now underway, officials expect the Centre to examine the charges before taking a final call on Verma’s future in the IAS cadre.
