Five people, including a 15-year-old boy and a 60-year-old man, were killed early Friday when a car veered off the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and fell into a gorge near Bhimpura village in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district. The accident occurred around 7:30 am, moments before the Mahi River bridge under the Rawati police station limits.
According to police, the vehiclea MH03 EL 1388–registered car was travelling from Delhi towards Mumbai when it broke through the roadside railing and crashed into the gorge below. Preliminary information indicates the passengers were residents of Mumbai and Ahmedabad, though their identities have not yet been confirmed.
Rawati police station in-charge Surendra Gadariya said local residents alerted authorities after spotting the wreckage. A police team and emergency responders reached the site shortly afterward and retrieved all five bodies from the vehicle. “The victims appear to have died on the spot due to the impact,” Gadariya said. The bodies were sent to Ratlam Medical College for post-mortem examinations.
Investigators are examining whether speeding, driver fatigue, or a possible mechanical failure led to the crash. The stretch of the expressway where the accident occurred is elevated and bordered by deep gorges, prompting police to issue renewed advisories to motorists to maintain caution, especially during early morning hours.
Authorities are also coordinating with police teams in Maharashtra and Gujarat to establish contact with the families of the deceased based on details recovered from the vehicle.
The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, one of India’s longest high-speed corridors, has witnessed multiple accidents in recent months, leading to calls for enhanced surveillance and safety barriers in accident-prone sections. Police said further action will be taken once the victims’ identities are verified and the cause of the crash is fully assessed.
