Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot arrived in Nagda directly from Mumbai after his wife Anita Gehlot fell ill, amid the ongoing political crisis in Karnataka.
Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot arrived in Nagda directly from Mumbai following his wife’s sudden illness, even as a major political transition unfolded in Karnataka.
Karnataka Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot made an unexpected arrival at his residence in Nagda, Ujjain district, late Wednesday evening, skipping Bengaluru at a time when the southern state is experiencing a significant political shift. The sudden visit triggered widespread speculation across political circles, though highly placed sources confirmed that the Governor’s travel was entirely due to a medical emergency within his family.
According to sources close to the family, the Governor's wife, Anita Gehlot, suffered a sudden spike in her blood pressure levels, causing her health to deteriorate quickly. Upon receiving the news while in Mumbai, Governor Gehlot altered his schedule and traveled directly to Nagda to be by her side.
Medical team monitoring status
Local health authorities moved quickly following the Governor's arrival. Initially, Anita Gehlot was examined by senior doctors from the local Choudhary Hospital. Following the preliminary check-up and initial stabilization, the medical team advised that she continue her treatment at home under strict observation.
A dedicated team of government doctors and administrative officials remains stationed near the residence to monitor her vitals. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a medical official present at the site stated that her condition is currently stable, and she is responding well to the prescribed treatment.
Escalating political drama in Bengaluru
The timing of Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot’s absence from Raj Bhavan has drawn intense scrutiny, given the high-stakes political developments taking place in Karnataka. Outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah formally tendered his resignation on Thursday afternoon following explicit directions from the Congress party high command, effectively ending his three-year second tenure.
"High command directed me two days ago to step down, accordingly I submitted my resignation today," Siddaramaiah stated during an emotional press conference in Bengaluru, accompanied by his deputy and presumed successor, DK Shivakumar.
Resignation submitted at Lok Bhavan
Because Governor Gehlot was away in Madhya Pradesh attending to his wife's health, Siddaramaiah could not hand over the papers to him personally. Instead, the outgoing Chief Minister drove down to Lok Bhavan along with senior cabinet ministers and submitted his formal resignation letter to the Governor’s Special Secretary, Prabhu Shankar.
Constitutional protocols dictate that a Chief Minister can submit a written resignation to Raj Bhavan officials or via secure electronic communication in the Governor's absence. The outgoing administration will continue to function as a caretaker government until the Governor officially returns to Bengaluru to accept the resignation and invite the next leader to form the government.
Media buildup outside Nagda residence
As news of the double development spread, a large contingent of media personnel gathered outside Gehlot’s Nagda residence. Local police personnel have deployed barricades to regulate movement around the high-profile neighborhood, ensuring privacy for the recovering family while maintaining a security corridor for the Governor.
Local administrative officials have confirmed that the Governor is keeping tabs on the constitutional proceedings in Bengaluru remotely. He is expected to fly back to the Karnataka capital once his wife's health stabilizes further, likely by late Thursday night or Friday morning, to oversee the formal transition of power to DK Shivakumar.
