Ujjain witnessed a disturbing act of brutality on Wednesday night when four men assaulted and threw a 35-year-old labourer onto railway tracks in a failed robbery attempt. The victim, Lakhan Singh, lost one of his legs after being run over by a passing train.
Lakhan, a daily-wage worker from Paldoona near Maksi, was walking home from Dewas Gate around 8 p.m. after collecting his dinner from Zero Point when the attackers stopped him. “They beat me, snatched Rs500, and held me down on the track until the train came close,” Lakhan told police from his hospital bed.
The speeding train severed his leg, leaving him unconscious. Passersby later informed the police, who took him to Charak Hospital. However, in a shocking display of negligence, the Government Railway Police (GRP) left his severed leg on the tracks and brought it to the hospital nearly 12 hours later.
Doctors at Charak Hospital administered first aid before referring Lakhan to Indore for advanced treatment. His other leg also sustained severe injuries in the accident.
When questioned, GRP officials initially claimed they were unaware of the incident. It was only after inquiries on Thursday morning that ASI Sawan Singh confirmed that the missing limb had been recovered and sent along with the victim to Indore in hopes of reattachment.
The incident has raised serious questions about the handling of crime and emergency response on railway premises. Despite the gravity of the attack and evident police delay, no arrests have been made so far. An investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the four accused behind the attempted robbery.
