Ladli Behna Beneficiary Count Falls by 5.70 Lakh as State Transfers ₹1,836 Crore Today

The number of beneficiaries under Madhya Pradesh’s flagship Ladli Behna Yojana has dropped by more than 5.70 lakh over the past two-and-a-half years, with no new names being added to the scheme. Despite the decline, the state government will transfer ₹1,836 crore today into the bank accounts of around 1.25 crore eligible women as part of the scheme’s 32nd instalment.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav will release the funds at a state-level programme in Makhan Nagar, located in Narmadapuram district. Each beneficiary will receive ₹1,500, the revised monthly assistance under the scheme.
According to official figures, the total number of beneficiaries currently stands at 1,25,31,000. The decline has been steady, with more than one lakh women removed from the list in the past year alone. Officials said the reduction is primarily due to the suspension of new registrations and the removal of beneficiaries who no longer meet eligibility criteria, including age limits.
When the Ladli Behna Yojana was launched in 2023, it received 1.31 crore applications. After verification and objection hearings, 2.18 lakh applications were rejected, bringing the number down to 1.29 crore. Since then, the count has continued to shrink through 2023, 2024 and 2025, contrary to expectations that the scheme would expand over time.
The financial commitment of the scheme has increased significantly following a hike in monthly assistance. Initially set at ₹1,250 per beneficiary, the amount was raised by ₹250 in November 2025, taking the monthly payout to ₹1,500. This revision has increased the state’s expenditure by over ₹300 crore every month. Until October 2025, the monthly transfer hovered around ₹1,500 crore, but by December it had crossed ₹1,850 crore.
Official data shows that between June 2023 and December 2025, a total of ₹48,632.70 crore has been transferred to beneficiaries. After Dr Mohan Yadav assumed office, ₹38,635.89 crore was disbursed between January 2024 and December 2025 alone.
The Ladli Behna Yojana was announced by former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in March 2023 as a monthly income support scheme aimed at improving women’s financial security and dignity. He had described it as more than a welfare initiative, calling it a social movement to strengthen the role of women in households and society.
While the scheme continues to deliver substantial financial assistance, the declining beneficiary base has raised questions about future coverage and sustainability, particularly in the absence of fresh enrolments.
