MP Becomes First State to Redirect MGNREGA Wages to Women’s Accounts

The Madhya Pradesh government has launched a landmark reform by ensuring that MGNREGA wages are now deposited directly into women’s bank accounts, instead of the male household heads traditionally listed on job cards. With this move under the ‘Maa Ka Bagiya’ scheme, MP has become the first state in India to implement such a system aimed at women’s financial independence.

Old System: Male-Dominated Job Cards

MGNREGA wages—earned by men or women—were deposited only into the male head’s account.

Review revealed that out of 31,500 groups, less than 1% had women registered as household heads.

This created a technical obstacle for direct transfers to women.

State’s Proposal & Centre’s Approval

MP sent a proposal on 2 September 2025 to the Ministry of Rural Development seeking rule amendments.

The Centre approved on 17 November, granting special permission.

Condition added: written consent from the male head is mandatory for routing wages to women’s accounts.

National MGNREGA Software Updated

The national portal now includes an option to link job cards directly to women.

New system applicable to all MGNREGA works initiated after 15 August 2025.

MGNREGA Commissioner Avi Prasad confirmed completion of the software upgrade.
