1. Very Heavy Rain Alert

The latest IMD subdivision warning issued on August 21 has upgraded the immediate threat for East Madhya Pradesh, where very heavy rainfall is forecast today along with thunderstorms and lightning. West Madhya Pradesh is also under a heavy-rain warning for August 21.

The warning remains active beyond Friday. East MP has heavy-rain warnings from August 22 through August 27, while West MP remains under heavy-rain warnings through August 25.

This makes the current spell more significant than an isolated round of monsoon showers.

2. East MP Takes Centre Stage

Eastern Madhya Pradesh is the main weather zone to watch today. The latest warning specifically places East MP under very heavy rain, with thunderstorm and lightning activity also expected.

The IMD's morning weather report also indicates that rainfall was recorded at most places across districts in the Rewa, Jabalpur, Shahdol and Sagar divisions during the previous 24 hours. Rain was also recorded at some locations in Bhopal, Narmadapuram and Chambal divisions.

The distribution will remain uneven, however. A very heavy spell in one district does not mean that the entire state will receive the same rainfall intensity.

3. West MP Also Wet

Western Madhya Pradesh is also entering a period of significant rainfall. IMD has issued heavy-rain warnings for August 21, 22, 23 and 24, with another heavy-rain warning on August 25.

Thunderstorms, lightning and squally conditions are included in the warnings for August 21-24.

Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Narmadapuram and surrounding districts can therefore expect changing weather conditions, although the exact timing and intensity of rain will differ from place to place.

4. Flash-Flood Risk Rises

The immediate concern is not only rainfall but also the possibility of rapid runoff and waterlogging.

IMD's latest morning report warns that moderate flash-flood risk is possible over some catchments and areas of Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours. The East MP districts listed in that assessment include Tikamgarh, Satna, Rewa, Chhatarpur, Damoh, Jabalpur, Katni, Umaria, Panna, Sidhi, Shahdol, Dindori and Anuppur.

The report also cautions that saturated soil and low-lying areas may experience surface runoff or waterlogging.

Residents should avoid flooded roads, swollen streams and low-level crossings during intense rainfall.

5. Temperature and Humidity

Rain and cloud cover are likely to keep daytime temperatures relatively moderate across many districts.

IMD's latest observations show that maximum temperatures changed little during the previous 24 hours. Temperatures were notably below normal in parts of Shahdol division, while Rewa, Jabalpur and Sagar divisions also recorded below-normal maximum temperatures.

Humidity, however, can remain high between rain spells. Short breaks in cloud cover may quickly make conditions feel warmer and more uncomfortable.

For Friday, rainfall intensity, lightning and localised flooding are more important weather concerns than extreme heat.

6. Farm and Travel Watch

The continuing rainfall can benefit kharif crops where soil moisture has been inadequate, but excessive water can create problems in low-lying and poorly drained fields.

Farmers should maintain drainage channels and avoid spraying pesticides or applying fertiliser during active rain and thunderstorms. Harvested produce, seeds and agricultural equipment should also be protected from water exposure.

For commuters and long-distance travellers, heavy showers can reduce visibility and cause temporary road disruptions. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly when thunderstorms develop.

7. August 22-27 Forecast

The latest seven-day IMD warning indicates that the wet spell will persist.

AUGUST 22: East and West MP remain under heavy-rain warnings, with thunderstorms and lightning also possible.

AUGUST 23-24: Heavy rain remains forecast across both subdivisions, while thunderstorm and lightning activity continues to be a concern.

AUGUST 25: Heavy rain remains in the forecast for both East and West MP.

AUGUST 26-27: East Madhya Pradesh continues under a heavy-rain warning, while the current West MP warning shows no warning for these two days.

This makes East MP the more persistent rainfall zone into the middle of next week.

THE NUMBER TO WATCH

The key monsoon question is not simply how much rain falls during one heavy spell.

The bigger issue is whether the continuing rainfall can reduce Madhya Pradesh's cumulative seasonal rainfall deficit and how evenly that recovery is distributed among districts.

The earlier tracker figure of around 544.4 mm and a 12 per cent deficit should not be presented as the August 21 position without a freshly verified cumulative IMD dataset. The IMD maintains separate daily, district and cumulative rainfall information, which should be used for the next verified scorecard.

WEATHER TAKEAWAY

Madhya Pradesh is under a strong monsoon spell on August 21, 2026, with very heavy rain forecast in East MP and heavy rain in West MP. Thunderstorms, lightning and squally winds add to today's weather risks.

The flash-flood assessment also warrants caution in several eastern districts, particularly where soils are already saturated.

The outlook remains wet through August 25 across both subdivisions, while East MP continues to carry a heavy-rain warning through August 27.
