PM Modi Presented with “Pushpak” Artwork from Betul: Tribal Heritage Receives National Recognition
Betul, MP
Madhya Pradesh's ancient tribal art has received national recognition. On the occasion of the 300th birth anniversary of Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar, during a Women Empowerment Conference held at Jamboree Ground in Bhopal, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the renowned "Pushpak" artwork, crafted using the famous Bharewa metal craft (Dhokra art) from Betul district.
Tigariya Village’s Art Reaches Global Stage
This artwork was created using the traditional metal crafting techniques of Tigariya village in Betul. Known as Dhokra or Bharewa art, this unique craft uses wax from honeycombs, clay, and brass. The process begins with shaping the figure in wax, coating it with layers of clay, and then firing it. Melted brass is poured into the mold, creating a beautiful and durable piece of artwork.
A Living Handicraft Village of 50 Families
Around 50 families in Tigariya village are engaged in this traditional craft. The village has now gained recognition as a “Craft Village.” Local artisan Baldev Waghmare is leading the preservation of this legacy, working with over 200 craftsmen to sustain and promote the art form.
CM’s Interest Took It to the PM
Baldev Waghmare shared that during a recent event in Sarni, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited his stall and showed great interest in the "Pushpak" piece. The CM immediately expressed his desire to present it to the Prime Minister. Accordingly, the magnificent artwork was gifted to PM Modi during the Bhopal event on Friday.
Dhokra Art Gains International Fame
Baldev Waghmare has been honored with the Kalidas Academy Award and the Vishwakarma Award. His Dhokra artworks have been exhibited in countries like the USA and France. This art form not only represents India’s cultural heritage but also showcases the excellence of Indian handicrafts on global platforms.
Government Support for the Craft
The Betul district administration and the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department are playing a key role in the preservation and promotion of this art. Tigariya village is being developed as a craft village, enhancing its potential as a tourism destination.
