Tension escalated in Goharganj town of Raisen district on Wednesday after a protest demanding the arrest of a man accused of raping a six-year-old girl turned violent, prompting police to resort to lathi-charge and tear-gas shelling. Authorities have imposed curfew-like restrictions, and heavy police deployment remains in place as the accused continues to evade arrest.
The unrest began five days after the assault, when residents gathered at the local school ground to press for the immediate apprehension of the suspect, identified as Salman alias Nazar. Police sources said multiple teams have been dispatched to trace him, but his whereabouts remain unknown.
Following the protest, residents began dispersing, but a group of young men attempted to march toward the Muslim Bawli settlement. Officers intercepted them, leading to a brief confrontation. Police used mild lathi-charge to push the crowd back, which triggered stone-pelting from the youths. In response, security forces fired tear-gas shells to disperse the mob. The group fled shortly afterward.
The clashes left the town largely deserted. Shops remained shut, and residents stayed indoors as a precaution. Officials described the situation as “under control,” though movement has been severely restricted. DIG Prashant Khare said more than 500 personnel from six districts, including a Quick Response Force, have been deployed to maintain order.
The incident has deepened community tension, with families demanding swift action and stricter surveillance in the area. Police officials have urged people to remain calm and avoid provocative gatherings while the search for the accused continues.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are expected to review security measures over the next 24 hours. The victim, meanwhile, continues to receive medical and psychological support as the investigation progresses.
