Victims were returning home after work in Rewa; police probe negligence over unmarked stationary vehicle
Three young men lost their lives in a tragic road accident late Wednesday night in Madhya Pradesh’s Maihar district after their motorcycle rammed into a parked trolley. The impact was so severe that all three riders died on the spot, police said. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and unattended heavy vehicles on highways.
The accident occurred near the Indian Gas Agency, close to Gujra Toll Plaza, under the jurisdiction of Mukundpur police outpost. According to preliminary information, the motorcycle was travelling at high speed when it collided with a trolley that was parked along the roadside without visible warning signs or reflectors.
What happened
Police officials said the accident took place late at night when visibility was low. The motorcycle, carrying three youths, failed to notice the stationary trolley in time and crashed into it. Due to the force of the collision, the riders were thrown off the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. They succumbed to their injuries at the spot before any medical assistance could be provided.
Who were the victims
The deceased have been identified as Ankit Sondhiya, Deepak Kol, and Nagendra Kol. All three were residents of Jamuna village and worked as daily wage labourers in Rewa. On the night of the incident, they were returning to their village after finishing work. Families of the victims have been informed, and the news has plunged their village into mourning.
Police response
Upon receiving information, Tala police station in-charge Mahendra Mishra and Mukundpur outpost in-charge Nageshwar Mishra reached the scene with a police team. The bodies were taken into custody and sent to Amarpatan for post-mortem examination after completing the required legal formalities. Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident.
Possible cause and investigation
While speeding is suspected to be a contributing factor, police are also examining whether negligence on the part of the trolley owner played a role. Officials noted that the trolley was parked along the road without proper indicators, which may have made it difficult for approaching vehicles to spot it in the dark. Statements of locals and highway staff are being recorded as part of the probe.
Rising road accident concerns
Road accidents have been on the rise across Madhya Pradesh, with overspeeding, poor lighting, and unregulated parking of heavy vehicles emerging as recurring causes. Traffic experts say unattended trolleys and trucks on highways pose a serious threat, especially during night hours. The Maihar accident adds to a growing list of fatal crashes linked to such hazards.
What lies ahead
Police said action will be taken if negligence is established during the investigation. Authorities have also reiterated the need for strict enforcement of traffic rules and proper safety measures for stationary vehicles. For the bereaved families, however, the loss is irreparable, underscoring the human cost of lapses in road safety.
