Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan confronted by Congress black-flag protest over fertiliser shortage in Satna

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan faced strong protests from Congress workers in Satna on Thursday over alleged fertilizer shortages affecting farmers across the district. The demonstration led by Congress MLA Siddharth Kushwaha resulted in a direct confrontation with the former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

Congress workers gathered near PM Shri Mahavidyalaya when Chouhan's convoy arrived for multiple programs, including an event on 'One Nation, One Election'. Led by district Congress president and MLA Siddharth Kushwaha, protesters displayed black flags and raised slogans demanding immediate action on fertilizer distribution issues.

The confrontation escalated when Kushwaha directly blocked Chouhan's convoy on the highway, forcing the Union Minister to step out and engage with the agitated farmers and Congress workers. Eyewitnesses reported a heated debate between Chouhan and Kushwaha regarding the fertilizer crisis affecting local farmers.

Chouhan's response to fertilizer crisis

Responding to the allegations, Chouhan acknowledged the concerns and provided statistical data to counter shortage claims. "In Satna district alone, 23,585 metric tonnes of urea was consumed by this time last year. This year 27,700 metric tonnes of urea has reached here," he stated. The Minister attributed increased demand to favorable rainfall conditions that boosted farming activities.

Chouhan assured protesters that 1,500 tonnes of additional fertilizer had arrived that day and promised continuous coordination with state authorities to address supply chain issues. He emphasized that farmers' interests remain the government's top priority while clarifying the separate roles of Agriculture and Fertilizer ministries.

The protest highlights ongoing farmer distress in Madhya Pradesh, with Congress leveraging fertilizer shortages as a key political issue against the BJP government. The incident demonstrates the persistent challenges in agricultural input distribution despite government claims of adequate supply management.
