Rewa district police have solved a major Rewa highway robbery case involving the looting of videographers returning from a family function late at night. Police arrested five accused, including three juveniles, and recovered stolen cameras, motorcycles, and a fake pistol used during the crime. Officials said the accused were involved in a planned robbery targeting people travelling on isolated highway stretches during nighttime.
Incident After Ceremony
According to police, the incident took place on the night of May 4 when complainant Pushpendra Patel and his friend were returning after recording a tilak ceremony in Pipra village under Naigarhi police station area. The two videographers were travelling back home on a motorcycle around 1:30 am when they were intercepted near the Adhiha bridge area.
Robbers Blocked Road
Police said three unidentified men stopped the victims on the highway and threatened them before carrying out the robbery. The accused allegedly used fear and intimidation to overpower the victims. The robbers then looted an HF Deluxe motorcycle along with two expensive professional video cameras belonging to Nikon and Sony companies before fleeing the spot.
Complaint Registered
Following the robbery, the victims approached Mangawan police station and lodged a formal complaint. Police immediately registered a case and launched an investigation into the Rewa highway robbery case. Officials began tracking suspicious movements and gathering intelligence regarding local criminal groups active in the region.
Investigation Leads to Arrests
During the investigation, police questioned several suspects based on technical inputs and local intelligence. Interrogation eventually led investigators to the accused involved in the robbery. Police confirmed that the accused later admitted to carrying out the crime during questioning.
Stolen Property Recovered
After the arrests, police recovered the stolen HF Deluxe motorcycle, both professional video cameras, and another motorcycle allegedly used during the robbery. A fake iron pistol used to threaten the victims was also seized from the possession of the accused. Officials estimated the total value of recovered items at around ₹3.25 lakh.
Accused Identified
Among those arrested are Avneesh Kevat, aged 19, a resident of Malbans under Garh police station area, and Yogendra Rajak, aged 20, a resident of Roura Kauthar village. Police also detained three juveniles allegedly involved in the incident. Authorities said legal procedures related to juvenile justice laws are being followed in their cases.
Fake Weapon Used
Investigators revealed that the accused used a fake iron pistol to create fear during the robbery. Although the weapon was not real, victims reportedly believed it to be genuine during the incident. Police officials said such fake weapons are increasingly being used in crimes to intimidate victims without attracting strict arms charges immediately.
Organized Night Crimes Concern
The Rewa highway robbery case has once again raised concerns over criminal activities on highways during late-night hours. Local residents and travellers have demanded stronger highway patrolling and increased police surveillance in isolated areas. People familiar with the route claimed that dark stretches near bridges and rural roads often become vulnerable spots for criminal activity.
Police Operation Praised
Senior police officials stated that the quick arrests were made possible due to coordinated investigation and timely action by local teams. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Superintendent of Police Gurkaran Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police Sandeep Mishra, and SDOP Pratibha Sharma.
Security Measures Under Review
Authorities are now reviewing security arrangements on highway routes connected to rural areas. Police are expected to increase late-night checking and patrolling in vulnerable locations to prevent similar incidents. Officials also advised people travelling during late-night hours to remain cautious and avoid isolated stretches whenever possible.
Police confirmed that all accused are being produced before the court as part of the legal process. Further investigation is ongoing to determine whether the group was involved in other similar robbery cases in the region.
