Rewa Man’s Body Exhumed 20 Days After Burial Over Suspicious Death; Fresh Postmortem Ordered

A 42-year-old man’s body was exhumed in Rewa nearly 20 days after burial after family members raised suspicion over his death. Police await postmortem findings for further action.

Nearly 20 days after a man was buried in Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, authorities exhumed his body following allegations by family members that his death may not have been natural. The body has now been sent for a fresh postmortem examination, and police say further action will depend on the medical report.

The case pertains to 42-year-old Mohammad Lukman, a resident of Kuthulia locality under Bichhiya police station limits. According to police, Lukman died suddenly during the intervening night of July 9 and 10.

At the time, the family believed the death was natural and did not seek a postmortem examination. His body was subsequently buried in his ancestral village Baikunthpur as per religious customs.

Family Raises Doubts After 20 Days

Nearly three weeks later, family members approached the Bichhiya police station expressing suspicion over the circumstances surrounding Lukman’s death and sought a fair investigation.

Relatives told police that they had begun to suspect that the death may not have been natural and requested that the body be exhumed for a postmortem examination.

Exhumation Conducted After SDM Approval

Bichhiya police station in-charge Ankita Mishra said all legal procedures were followed before the exhumation was carried out.

After obtaining permission from the concerned Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), a team comprising police officials and administrative authorities reached the Baikunthpur graveyard, where the grave was opened and the body was recovered.

The remains were then sent for postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

No Direct Allegations Against Anyone

The deceased’s brother, Mohammad Dawood, said the family had serious doubts regarding Lukman’s death but had not accused any individual directly.

He stated that only the postmortem findings and police investigation would reveal whether any criminal act was involved.

Police Await Medical Report

Police officials said the postmortem report would play a key role in determining the next course of action.

If medical findings indicate foul play or any criminal angle, a case will be registered under relevant sections and a detailed investigation will follow.

For now, police say all aspects of the case are being examined, and no conclusions will be drawn until the forensic and medical reports are received.

The incident has drawn attention due to the rare legal process of exhumation, which is undertaken only after administrative approval in cases where doubts arise regarding the cause of death after burial.
