Rewa Power Outage: City Plunges into Darkness Amid Scorching Nautapa Heat

Residents of Rewa city endured a night of total darkness on Thursday as electricity supply collapsed across large parts of the municipal area amid severe heatwave conditions. With temperatures hovering around 44 degrees Celsius during the peak Nautapa period, the prolonged outage left thousands of families, especially children, women, and the elderly, battling extreme discomfort.

Power supply failed in several key localities around 10 pm and remained suspended till early Friday morning. Notably, the outage also hit the bungalow of Rewa Nagar Nigam President Vyankatesh Pandey and his surrounding neighbourhood, exposing the scale of the failure.

Widespread Disruption Across Localities

Areas including Padra, Saman, Dhekha, Amhiya, Sirmour Chowraha, Bichhiya, University Road, and Purani Basti were among the worst affected. In many places, frequent tripping occurred, while in others, supply was not restored throughout the night. With no strong winds, storms, or adverse weather reported in the city, residents questioned the reasons behind the sudden and complete breakdown.

As hours passed without electricity, domestic inverters began to fail, leaving households without fans or lights in sweltering conditions. The situation worsened by morning when water motors could not run, severely affecting drinking water supply in multiple colonies.

Locked Office, Unreachable Officials

The response from the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board (MPEB) added to public frustration. When residents tried contacting helpline numbers, they were asked to reach out to the concerned Junior Engineer (JE), whose mobile phone was found switched off.

A visit by a local reporting team to the MPEB office around midnight revealed a locked building with no responsible officer or staff present. The absence of any duty personnel at the office during such a major outage drew sharp criticism from affected citizens waiting outside.

Sleepless Nights on Rooftops

Many families had no option but to spend the night on rooftops and open terraces to escape the unbearable indoor heat.

Rajesh Tiwari, a resident of Saman, said his entire family sat on the rooftop the whole night. In Amhiya, Pooja Mishra recounted how her small children cried continuously due to the heat. Mohammad Arif from Dhekha described the outage as "life-threatening" during Nautapa and questioned why the department had not made prior arrangements. Sangeeta Patel of Bichhiya said the lack of power prevented water motors from running, leaving many households without water by morning.

Public Anger Mounts Over Civic Failure

The fact that even the Municipal Corporation President’s residence remained without power for the entire night became a talking point among residents. Many saw it as an indication of the broader collapse of civic services in the city.

Citizens have demanded strict action against negligent officials and immediate improvement in the power infrastructure. The episode has once again highlighted the vulnerability of Rewa’s electricity distribution system during peak summer months when demand is at its highest.

As of Friday morning, no official statement had been issued by the electricity department explaining the reasons for the outage or the steps being taken to prevent recurrence.

Growing Concerns Over Summer Preparedness

Rewa, like several other districts in Madhya Pradesh, has been grappling with intense heat this season. The combination of extreme temperatures and unreliable power supply has put additional pressure on residents, particularly those from economically weaker sections who lack backup arrangements.

Local representatives and citizens have called upon authorities to urgently review and strengthen the power distribution network before further heatwave days. Many have also urged better coordination between municipal and electricity officials to ensure accountability during such crises.

The incident has sparked discussions on the need for proactive maintenance and emergency response mechanisms in the region’s power infrastructure.
