Rewa: Three Held for Robbing Couple in Chuhiya Ghati

Govindgarh police arrested three youths for robbing a Shahdol couple in Rewa’s Chuhiya Ghati on May 31 night. Cash, bike, and crime video recovered; accused sent to jail.

Govindgarh police crack night-time highway robbery case within hours; video evidence and stolen bike seized

In a swift operation, Govindgarh police have arrested three youths for allegedly robbing a couple from Shahdol in the secluded Chuhiya Ghati area late on May 31 night. The victims, who had stepped off a bus due to the wife's sudden illness, were targeted while resting by the roadside.

The incident occurred around 2 am near Aamchua Temple when the couple was most vulnerable. Police said the robbers not only took cash and documents but also recorded the crime on a mobile phone, a move that ultimately helped in their identification and arrest.

Midnight Ordeal for Shahdol Couple

Rup Singh Gond and his wife Pinki Gond were returning to their village Jaitpur in Shahdol after a medical visit in Rewa. As the bus moved through the hilly terrain of Chuhiya Ghati, Pinki’s health suddenly deteriorated. The couple requested the driver to stop and got down near the temple.

They had barely sat down near some bushes on the roadside when three men on a motorcycle surrounded them. The assailants allegedly threatened the couple and snatched around Rs 4,500 in cash along with their identity papers before fleeing towards the hills.

Police Launch Quick Investigation

Following a complaint by the victims, Govindgarh police registered a case and began probing the matter. Acting on initial leads and local intelligence, officers detained three suspects for questioning. During sustained interrogation, all three confessed to the crime, police said.

“The accused have admitted to committing the robbery. They also recorded the incident on their phone, which we have seized as crucial evidence,” a police officer familiar with the probe said.

Looters Identified, Stolen Items Recovered

The arrested persons have been identified as Shiv Sagar Patel (23), Isahaq Khan (18), and Neeraj Yadav (21), all residents of Madwa village under Govindgarh police station.

Acting on their disclosure, police recovered Rs 3,600 in cash, two mobile phones, and the motorcycle used in the crime bearing registration number MP-17-MD-1618. The total value of the seized items has been estimated at Rs 78,600.

Video Recording Backfires on Accused

In a strange twist, the robbers’ attempt to film the crime for their own thrill has provided strong digital evidence against them. Officials confirmed that the video clearly shows the sequence of events and the involvement of the three accused.

The police have taken the video into possession and are examining it for any other possible links or prior offences. All three have been produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody.

Background of Chuhiya Ghati Area

Chuhiya Ghati, a forested and hilly stretch between Rewa and Shahdol districts, is known for occasional instances of highway crime, especially late at night. Sparse lighting and limited patrolling in certain pockets have made the area somewhat vulnerable, though police claim regular drives are conducted to check such incidents.

Local residents have often demanded better street lighting and increased police presence along this route, which sees considerable movement of passengers travelling between Rewa and adjoining districts of eastern Madhya Pradesh.

Public Reaction and Police Assurance

The quick arrest has brought relief to the victims and locals. Rup Singh Gond expressed gratitude to the police for their prompt action. Many in the area welcomed the development, hoping it would act as a deterrent against similar crimes.

Govindgarh police have assured strict action against anti-social elements operating in the region. “We are committed to ensuring safety on highways, especially for vulnerable travellers,” an officer stated.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Rewa, has been briefed about the case and has directed officials to intensify night patrolling in sensitive stretches like Chuhiya Ghati.

The case is being investigated further to ascertain if the arrested trio was involved in any other similar incidents in the recent past.
