ISRO Launches EOS-05: India Gets First Imaging Satellite from Geosynchronous Orbit

The GSLV-F17 placed EOS-05 in its intended orbit early Friday, giving India a new Earth-observation capability from geosynchronous orbit about 36,000 km above Earth.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched EOS-05, India's first imaging satellite designed to operate from geosynchronous orbit, early Friday. The satellite was carried by the GSLV-F17 from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

The launch took place at 2:55 am IST on September 4. ISRO has confirmed that GSLV-F17 successfully accomplished its mission and placed EOS-05 into the intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).

The mission marks an important step in India's Earth-observation programme. According to ISRO, EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth-observation spacecraft and India's first-ever imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit.

What makes EOS-05 different?

Most Earth-imaging satellites operate in comparatively low orbits and pass over a particular region at intervals. EOS-05 is designed for imaging from a much higher geosynchronous orbit, around 36,000 km above Earth, allowing repeated observation of large areas.This capability can be particularly useful for applications that require frequent monitoring. Earlier ISRO documentation described the mission as intended for near-real-time imaging of large areas, including natural resources and disaster events.The satellite's imaging capabilities are also designed to cover multiple spectral bands. The mission has been described as providing advanced imaging across visible, infrared, multispectral and hyperspectral bands, potentially expanding its usefulness for environmental and disaster monitoring.

A major mission for GSLV

GSLV-F17 is the 19th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). ISRO's mission information confirms that the rocket successfully delivered EOS-05 to Sub-GTO.The satellite weighs about 2,367 kg, making it the heaviest spacecraft placed by a GSLV into Sub-GTO/GTO-class orbit, according to the post-launch account reported by NDTV. The satellite was reported to be healthy after separation, with its solar panels deployed successfully.The spacecraft will subsequently undergo orbit-raising operations before reaching its final geosynchronous operational position.

From an earlier setback to EOS-05

The mission also revives an objective that remained unfinished after the failure of the GSLV-F10/EOS-03 mission in August 2021. ISRO's launch records list that mission as unsuccessful, while the new EOS-05 mission uses the GSLV platform to establish India's geosynchronous Earth-imaging capability.The successful launch therefore has significance beyond the deployment of another Earth-observation satellite. It demonstrates the ability to place a relatively heavy imaging spacecraft into a geosynchronous-class orbit, opening up a different approach to frequent observation of large areas.

How it can help India

EOS-05's intended applications include Earth observation, disaster monitoring and natural-resource assessment. Frequent imaging can help in tracking rapidly changing situations such as floods, cyclones and other large-scale events, while the satellite's broader imaging capability can support applications involving land and environmental monitoring.

For India, the advantage is not simply the altitude at which the satellite operates. Its geosynchronous position and imaging payload are intended to provide a persistent observational capability over a broad region, complementing India's existing fleet of Earth-observation satellites.MP/Chhattisgarh relevance: No direct Madhya Pradesh or Chhattisgarh-specific development is part of the EOS-05 launch. However, the satellite's disaster-monitoring and Earth-observation capabilities could have future applications across both states, particularly for floods, agriculture and natural-resource monitoring.
