The Supreme Court of India will remain closed on September 11, 2026 (Friday), in view of arrangements related to the BRICS summit in New Delhi. The court’s Full Court has declared the day a holiday for both the Supreme Court and its Registry.
The Supreme Court’s Administrative General Branch issued a circular on September 9 confirming the holiday. The Registry will also remain closed on September 12 (Saturday). The decision comes amid security and administrative arrangements in the national capital for the BRICS-related events.
November 28 Declared Full Working Day
To compensate for the additional holiday, November 28, 2026 (Saturday) has been declared a full working day for the Supreme Court.
The arrangement is part of the changes made to the court’s working schedule following directions issued by the central government for offices in Delhi during the BRICS summit period.
Government Offices in Delhi Also Affected
The Supreme Court’s decision follows an Office Memorandum dated September 3, 2026, issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions.
The memorandum directed the closure of Central Government offices in Delhi in connection with the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit. The Supreme Court’s administrative decision was subsequently taken in line with the arrangements for the national capital.
What the Supreme Court Circular Says
According to the circular, September 11 has been declared a holiday for the Supreme Court as well as its Registry. September 12 will be a holiday specifically for the Registry.
The court has also issued arrangements for rescheduling miscellaneous and regular matters affected by the holiday. The Supreme Court’s official website currently lists both the holiday circular and a separate notice concerning the rescheduling of matters.
BRICS Judicial Engagement in New Delhi
The Supreme Court has already been involved in BRICS-related judicial engagements this month. The court hosted the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi from September 4 to 6, bringing together senior judicial representatives from BRICS member states and partner countries.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant also held bilateral meetings with judicial leaders from countries including Russia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, the UAE, Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Iran and Uzbekistan during the forum.
