Global News Today covers Panama Canal traffic cuts, an FBI hunt for an Indian national, Finland's Russia probe and Ladakh's new High Court bench.
The Panama Canal is preparing to reduce vessel traffic amid drought pressure, Finland is investigating a suspected Russian airspace breach, the FBI is hunting an Indian national in an extortion case, while India has approved a new High Court bench for Ladakh. These are among the major national and international developments in focus on August 21.
Panama Canal Cuts Traffic
The Panama Canal is set to reduce daily vessel transits from September as drought conditions put pressure on the freshwater reserves required to operate its locks.
Under the announced schedule, daily traffic will fall from 36 vessels to 34 from September 3 and then to 32 from September 15. The restrictions could affect shipping schedules on one of the world's busiest maritime trade corridors.
The canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and handles a significant volume of international cargo. Extended restrictions can force shipping companies to wait longer, carry lighter loads or consider alternative routes, potentially adding to transport costs.
US Bomb Plot Case
US authorities have charged Jessica Bowie, 35, over an alleged plot to attack New York's State Capitol and alleged support for Islamic State.
According to court filings cited in reports, investigators allege that Bowie sought guidance related to explosives, studied security arrangements and discussed using a delivery-worker disguise as part of the alleged plan.
The charges remain allegations, and prosecutors will have to prove their case in court.
Mexico Rescues Two Fishermen
Two Mexican fishermen have been rescued after surviving five days adrift in the Pacific Ocean, according to Mexican authorities.
The men were located around 150 miles off Chiapas after reportedly keeping themselves afloat inside a cooler. Mexico's Navy deployed personnel and aircraft during the rescue operation before taking them for medical attention.
Their rescue brought an end to a multi-day ordeal at sea and drew attention to the risks faced by fishing crews operating far from the coast.
Finland Probes Russian Aircraft
Finland has opened an investigation into a suspected violation of its airspace by a Russian state aircraft over the Gulf of Finland.
Finnish authorities said the aircraft may have travelled several kilometres inside sovereign airspace near Porvoo before returning towards international airspace. Surveillance data is being examined to establish its exact route and the circumstances behind the incident.
The case comes amid heightened security along the NATO-Russia frontier. Finland joined NATO in 2023 after abandoning decades of military non-alignment following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
FBI Hunts Indian National
The FBI is searching for an Indian national identified in US court records as “No Name Given Kamal” over his alleged involvement in a transnational extortion network linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi organised crime group.
A federal arrest warrant was issued on July 1 by the US District Court for the Central District of California. Kamal faces a charge of conspiracy to interfere with commerce by extortion.
The FBI has sought public assistance in locating him. The allegations against Kamal have not been proven in court.
Ladakh Gets Court Bench
In a major India News Update, the Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of a High Court of Jammu and Kashmir bench in Ladakh, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The move is aimed at bringing higher judicial services closer to residents of the Union Territory and reducing the time and expense involved in travelling outside Ladakh for cases before the High Court.
The decision is expected to improve institutional access to justice in the strategically important Himalayan region.
India Allows Sugar Imports
The Centre has allowed duty-free imports of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar under a tariff-rate quota until October 31 amid concerns over domestic prices, according to PTI.
The government has also placed limits on sugar stocks held by bulk consumers as part of measures aimed at improving availability and checking excessive stock accumulation.
The decision will be closely watched by sugar mills, traders and consumers because any significant change in domestic supply could influence prices during the coming months.
More Headlines In Focus
The US Food and Drug Administration has upgraded the risk classification of a recall involving frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix following an E. coli outbreak reportedly linked to 12 illnesses in two states.
Meanwhile, former Army Chief General Manoj Naravane has said China will be India's principal long-term competitor across political, economic, trade and military fields, while Pakistan will continue to demand attention because of immediate security concerns.
His remarks underline the widening strategic debate over how India balances its security priorities along its northern and western frontiers.
