On the special occasion of Mithun Chakraborty’s birthday today, let’s take a closer look at his life—
Mithun Chakraborty’s real name is Gourang Chakraborty. Born on 16 June 1950 in Kolkata, he was the younger of two brothers. In his youth, he was drawn towards Naxalite ideology. At that time, the Naxal movement was rapidly spreading in Bengal. Influenced by some people, Mithun left his family and joined a Naxal group.
Brother’s death changed his outlook
During this time, Mithun’s elder brother died due to an electric shock. The family’s condition worsened and they were left alone. Mithun broke all ties with Naxalism for the sake of his family and returned home. He took the responsibility of the household on his shoulders.
Days spent hungry in Mumbai
After returning home, Mithun decided to pursue a career in acting. For this, he went to the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune. After completing his acting studies, he moved to Mumbai in search of work. He visited studios, but faced rejection everywhere. Things got so bad that he had to sleep on the footpath several times with an empty stomach.
Had to go into hiding fearing police action
When the police started taking action against the Naxalites, Mithun had to go underground along with his comrades. He remained in hiding for several months.
