Bollywood actor Sonu Sood has stepped in to support the 10-month-old son of Nikki Devi, a woman shot dead during the Bihar Assembly elections over alleged bogus voting, by taking responsibility for the child’s education from KG to post-graduation. The announcement came after a video call between Sood and Ashutosh Kumar, national president of the Bhumihar-Brahmin Ekta Manch Foundation, who briefed the actor about the incident.
Nikki Devi, a resident of Dullamchak village under Chauri police station, was shot in the face on 6 November during the first phase of polling. Eyewitnesses said five to six men blocked the road and opened fire, killing Nikki while her infant son was nearby. Her husband, Rohit Rai, described the scene as traumatic, stating his son broke down nightly searching for his mother. He urged authorities to ensure strict punishment for the perpetrators.
“The killers of my wife must receive the strictest punishment under the law,” Rohit said, adding that the intervention by Sonu Sood provided a measure of relief amidst his grief. Nikki’s brother-in-law, Ritesh, who survived the attack despite being targeted, recounted how the assailants fired multiple shots and fled before villagers could respond.
The murder had sparked tension in the Tarari Assembly segment, with local residents expressing outrage and blocking roads in protest. Several political and social leaders have since visited the bereaved family to offer support.
Ashutosh Kumar confirmed that in addition to Sonu Sood’s commitment, he plans to meet senior district officials to press for the immediate arrest of those responsible. He emphasized that the family’s wishes for the child’s welfare will be prioritized.
This incident highlights the continuing risks faced by civilians during elections in politically sensitive areas and underscores the role of civil society and public figures in providing relief and support to affected families.
