Voting for the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) election began at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and will continue until 5:30 p.m., with a break from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. According to the Election Committee, around 9,000 students are eligible to cast their votes this year. Counting will begin at 9 p.m., and results will be announced on November 6.
The elections are being held for four key postsPresident, Vice President, General Secretary, and Joint Secretary. A total of 20 candidates are contesting this year, making it one of the most competitive JNUSU polls in recent years.
Since morning, long queues of students were seen at polling booths across the campus, while representatives from various student organisations actively encouraged voters to support their candidates.
This year’s election has seen the formation of a strong Left alliance comprising the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), All India Students’ Association (AISA), and Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF). The alliance has fielded Aditi Mishra for President, Kijakoot Gopika Babu for Vice President, Sunil Yadav for General Secretary, and Danish Ali for Joint Secretary.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has fielded Vikas Patel, Tanya Kumari, Rajeshwar Kant Dubey, and Anuj for the four posts, while the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) candidates include Vikas Bishnoi, Sheikh Shahnawaz Alam, Preeti Malik, and Kuldeep Ojha.
Last year, AISA’s Nitish Kumar was elected President, while ABVP’s Vaibhav Meena won the post of Joint Secretary marking ABVP’s first major win at JNU in nearly a decade.
Security arrangements have been strengthened across the campus to ensure smooth polling and counting. Results are expected to shape the political direction of JNU’s student politics for the coming year
