Digital desk
National Sports Day 2026 celebrations conclude on August 30. Know about the ‘Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat’ theme and nationwide fitness activities.
India is observing the final day of the three-day National Sports Day 2026 celebrations on August 30, with schools, higher educational institutions and sports campuses across the country participating in activities aimed at promoting fitness and sports participation. The celebrations, being held under the theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat”, began on August 28.
The nationwide programme focuses on encouraging people, particularly students and young citizens, to adopt active and healthy lifestyles through sports and fitness-related activities. Various institutions have been organising events as part of the three-day observance, with activities planned across different states.
Fitness Activities Across States
As part of the concluding day's programme, states and institutions are expected to conduct fitness-oriented activities under the ‘Move’ initiative. Such activities are aimed at encouraging participants to include physical movement and exercise in their daily routines.
In states such as Goa, ‘Move’ activities are being organised as part of the National Sports Day programme. Schools, colleges and other participating institutions are also taking part in activities designed to increase awareness about the importance of physical fitness and sports.
Focus On Young Participants
The National Sports Day celebrations place a particular emphasis on students and young people. Schools and higher educational institutions have been brought into the nationwide programme to encourage greater participation in sports beyond competitive events.
The activities provide students with opportunities to participate in fitness sessions and sports-related programmes while reinforcing the importance of regular physical activity.
Three-Day Nationwide Programme
The celebrations started on August 28 and are concluding on August 30. During the three-day programme, participating institutions and sports facilities across the country have been conducting activities linked to the broader objective of promoting a sporting culture.
The concluding day provides another opportunity for participants to join fitness activities and reinforce the message of the campaign.
‘Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat’
The theme “Khelega Bharat, Jeetega Bharat” highlights the connection between wider participation in sports and India's sporting aspirations. The campaign seeks to promote sports as an integral part of everyday life rather than limiting participation to professional athletes.
The National Sports Day programme also seeks to create greater awareness among young people about the role of exercise, fitness and sporting activities in maintaining an active lifestyle.
Why August 29 Is National Sports Day
National Sports Day is observed in India every year on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. However, the 2026 celebrations are being conducted as a three-day programme from August 28 to August 30, with the final day's activities concluding the nationwide campaign.
The concluding programmes on August 30 are expected to continue the focus on fitness, participation and sports awareness, with schools, higher educational institutions and sports campuses joining activities under the national theme.
