Jordan Intercepts 18 of 20 Iranian Ballistic Missiles

Jordan said its air-defence systems intercepted 18 of 20 ballistic missiles launched from Iran towards its territory, as the escalating US-Iran conflict widened to another regional front.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it launched what it described as a “punitive operation” against a US military facility in Jordan after American forces destroyed Iranian oil carriers.

Jordan's military said the incoming missiles were detected and engaged before reaching populated areas. Eighteen were intercepted, while two fell in unpopulated locations.

The development came amid a rapidly escalating cycle of attacks between Iranian and US forces across the Middle East.

Iran Claims Punitive Strike

Iran's IRGC said it had carried out “devastating” missile strikes against a US military base in Jordan.

Iranian state media reported that ballistic missiles were launched towards the Al-Azraq base, describing the operation as retaliation for recent US attacks on Iranian vessels.

The Iranian statement did not immediately provide independently verifiable details about damage caused at the military installation.

The attack represents a significant expansion of the conflict because Jordan is a US partner and hosts American military personnel and infrastructure.

Jordan Reports 18 Interceptions

Jordan's armed forces said their air-defence systems engaged 20 ballistic missiles launched towards Jordanian territory.

The military said 18 missiles were successfully intercepted and destroyed, while the other two landed in unpopulated areas.

The statement did not immediately report casualties or major damage.

The high interception rate limited the immediate impact of the Iranian barrage, although the attack demonstrated Tehran's ability to target areas beyond its direct confrontation with US forces.

US-Iran Strikes Escalate

The Iranian missile attack followed a series of US strikes against Iranian oil carriers.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers after the IRGC attempted to attack a US Navy warship with ballistic missiles on two occasions.

According to CENTCOM, the US warship successfully evaded both attacks and continued its patrol in regional waters.

The American military said crews were ordered to abandon the tankers before the vessels were struck and rendered inoperable.

Tanker Strikes Trigger Response

CENTCOM described the latest tanker operation as a response to Iran's failed attacks on US naval forces.

The strikes marked the second such US operation in less than a week.

On Saturday, American forces had also destroyed three Iranian crude carriers after Iran attempted to attack a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer, according to CENTCOM.

The US military has maintained that its actions are intended to impose costs on Iranian networks supporting the IRGC.

Conflict Spreads Across Region

The exchange involving Jordan illustrates the increasingly regional character of the conflict.

Iran has previously threatened US bases and interests across the Middle East in response to American military operations.

Jordan's geographic position makes it strategically important. The country borders Israel, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia and has long cooperated with the United States on regional security and counterterrorism operations.

Any sustained Iranian attacks on Jordan could therefore increase pressure on Amman and further draw regional allies into the conflict.

Air Defences Under Pressure

Jordan's interception of 18 missiles demonstrates the role of layered air-defence systems in protecting populated areas and military facilities.

However, repeated missile attacks can still create risks even when most projectiles are intercepted. Debris from intercepted missiles can fall over populated areas, while successful penetrations can cause damage to infrastructure.

Jordan's authorities have not reported significant casualties from the latest attack, with the two missiles that evaded interception reportedly landing in unpopulated locations.

US Maintains Naval Operations

Despite the Iranian attacks, CENTCOM said the targeted US Navy warship remained operational and continued patrolling regional waters.

The US military has also continued operations against Iranian oil shipping.

The sequence of missile attacks and tanker strikes has created a direct cycle of military retaliation, increasing the risk that further attacks could involve additional US bases, naval assets or commercial shipping.

Wider Middle East Risks Grow

The latest Iranian missile barrage against Jordan adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile regional conflict.

For Jordan, the immediate priority will be protecting its territory and preventing the fighting from spreading further into the kingdom. For Washington, the attack could reinforce calls to protect US forces stationed across the region.

For Tehran, meanwhile, the missile operation signals that retaliation can extend beyond direct US-Iran encounters.

With the United States continuing strikes against Iranian assets and Iran threatening further attacks, the possibility of additional escalation remains high. The next major concern will be whether Tehran launches another wave of missiles or targets US-linked facilities elsewhere in the region.
