Rail services suspended in northwestern Ontario as nearly 150 wildfires continue to rage across the province
A dramatic incident unfolded in Canada's Ontario province after a freight train became trapped amid a massive wildfire when a burning truck collided with it in an area where dense smoke had reduced visibility to near zero. All railway employees on board managed to escape safely on foot, while rail operations in the affected region were temporarily suspended as authorities battled rapidly spreading forest fires.
The incident occurred in northwestern Ontario, where large-scale wildfires have forced evacuations and disrupted transportation across several communities.
Dramatic Video Goes Viral
A video recorded from inside the train has gone viral on social media, showing towering flames surrounding the locomotive as thick smoke engulfs the tracks. The sky appears orange due to the wildfire, while railway employees can be heard urgently calling for evacuation.
The footage has triggered widespread discussion about railway safety during extreme wildfire conditions.
Burning Truck Hit the Train
According to Canadian National (CN) Railway, a truck caught fire in the smoke-filled area before colliding with the train. Despite the impact and surrounding flames, all railway workers evacuated the locomotive safely on foot without any reported injuries.
Following the incident, CN Railway suspended rail traffic in the affected section as a precaution and initiated evacuation measures for employees and residents in the nearby town of Armstrong, which has been impacted by the ongoing wildfires.
Safety Concerns Raised
The incident has also sparked concerns over employee safety protocols.
Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Provincial Parliament Sol Mamakwa said the railway employee who recorded the viral video feared disciplinary action because filming during duty is reportedly against company policy.
Mamakwa argued that the employee's priority was survival during the emergency and urged the company to support workers rather than consider punitive action.
Hazardous Cargo Trains Stopped
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said three trains transporting flammable materials near Collins First Nation have been halted due to wildfire risks.
Authorities stated there is currently no immediate danger to the wider public, but railway operators and emergency response agencies continue to closely monitor the evolving situation.
Nearly 150 Wildfires Burning
Northwestern Ontario is experiencing one of its most severe wildfire periods, with around 150 active wildfires reported across the region.
Several communities remain under mandatory evacuation orders, while provincial authorities have declared a Restricted Fire Zone to reduce the risk of additional fires.
Residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel, remain alert to emergency warnings and keep emergency supplies ready as firefighting operations continue.
Officials say weather conditions, including high temperatures and dry vegetation, continue to pose challenges for containment efforts.
