The United States has launched a comprehensive review of its military presence across Europe as the Donald Trump administration pushes NATO allies to assume greater responsibility for the continent's conventional defence.

The review marks a significant step in Washington's broader strategy of encouraging European nations to take the lead in regional security while allowing the US to focus more heavily on strategic challenges posed by China.

US officials said the reassessment follows commitments made by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth during last month's meeting with NATO allies.
