Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced the restructuring on Independence Day, saying the move will strengthen law and order and improve public safety across the expanding city.

Five Commissionerates Planned for Bengaluru

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Saturday announced that the Bengaluru Police Commissionerate will be reorganised into five separate commissionerates as part of a broader plan to strengthen policing and governance in the city.

The announcement was made during Shivakumar’s Independence Day address at the Field Marshal Manekshaw Parade Ground. He said the government would also establish new police stations wherever necessary to improve law-and-order management.

Existing Police System Faces Pressure

Shivakumar said Bengaluru’s existing policing infrastructure was originally designed for a population of around 10 lakh, but the city has expanded substantially since then.

The government believes dividing the existing commissionerate into smaller administrative units will make policing more manageable and allow senior officers to respond more effectively to local law-and-order requirements.

Focus on Law and Order

The proposed restructuring is aimed primarily at improving public safety and strengthening law-and-order mechanisms across Bengaluru.

Under the new arrangement, additional police stations will be created wherever required. The government expects smaller commissionerates to allow more focused supervision and faster coordination between police units.

The plan follows an earlier in-principle proposal to divide Bengaluru’s police administration into five smaller commissionerates.

Traffic Management Also a Priority

The police restructuring comes amid growing concerns over Bengaluru’s traffic congestion. Shivakumar said the government would work on improving coordination between the Greater Bengaluru Authority and traffic police.

The administration is also planning measures aimed at reducing congestion and improving mobility as the city continues to expand.

Anti-Rowdy Squad to Be Created

Shivakumar also announced plans to establish a dedicated Anti-Rowdy Squad in Bengaluru.

The proposed unit is intended to strengthen action against habitual offenders and organised disruptive activity and help create what the government described as a more secure environment for residents.

Police Reform Part of Larger Bengaluru Plan

The decision to reorganise the police commissionerate forms part of a wider governance restructuring in Bengaluru.

The state has already established the Greater Bengaluru Authority and five municipal corporations as part of efforts to decentralise administration and manage the rapidly growing metropolitan region more effectively.

The government has also announced major infrastructure projects, including road development and expansion of the Namma Metro network, alongside initiatives focused on lakes, green spaces and urban mobility.

Shivakumar Outlines City Development Roadmap

The police restructuring was one of several announcements made by Shivakumar during his first Independence Day address as Karnataka Chief Minister.

His broader roadmap includes infrastructure investment, artificial intelligence initiatives, employment generation and efforts to expand Karnataka’s technology-driven growth beyond Bengaluru.

The proposed five-way division of the police commissionerate is expected to become a significant component of the government’s strategy to improve administration and public safety as Bengaluru continues to grow.
