Controversial Nagpur flyover cuts through building balcony, NHAI and Civic Body at odds

The newly inaugurated 8.9-kilometre flyover on NH-353D at Ashok Circle in Nagpur has ignited fresh controversy after its beam passes directly through a residential building’s balcony.

Constructed at a cost of Rs.998 crore, the elevated corridor linking Indora and Dighori was claimed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to maintain a 1.5-metre gap from the house. However, locals spotted the structure intruding on the balcony, prompting widespread social media outrage.

Design Flaw or Legal Encroachment?
NHAI officials maintain that the alignment is technically sound and insist they informed the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) during the detailed project report phase. “There is a house at the turning point of the flyover,” said an NHAI spokesperson. “The balcony was constructed after our work, making it illegal and scheduled for demolition once proper notices are served.”

In contrast, the municipal body claims it was only alerted when residents raised the issue. “We were never consulted on the flyover alignment or the building,” countered an NMC engineer. “Since the balcony isn’t officially declared an encroachment, we can’t order its demolition immediately. We’ve asked the owner to submit title documents; if valid, NHAI must compensate them.”

Resident Speaks Out
The homeowner, whose balcony is intersected by the girder, downplayed safety concerns. “The flyover stands 15–16 feet above our home. We aren’t in danger—some are exaggerating for social media fame,” he said.

Echoes of Bhopal’s 90-Degree Overbridge
This incident evokes memories of Bhopal’s infamous 90-degree rail overbridge, which sparked nationwide memes and a high-court enquiry. Eight PWD officers were suspended over the design, though the state PWD Minister later defended its safety. A MANIT engineering report presented in court led the bench to question disciplinary actions against contractors who “followed official instructions.”

As Nagpur’s civic and highway authorities spar over responsibility, commuters and residents await a swift resolution to this latest Nagpur flyover controversy. Continuous updates will follow as legal notices and compensation talks progress.
