Crime in India rises by 7%: UP tops in murders, Rajasthan leads in rape cases

On Tuesday, The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released its annual report on crimes in India for 2023, highlighting alarming trends in crimes against women, children, cybercrime, and farmers’ suicides.
A total of 62.41 lakh crimes were registered in India in 2023, marking a 7.2% increase compared to 2022.
Mumbai tops in online fraud
Among 19 metro cities, Mumbai reported the highest online cheating cases (2,396) and ranked second in cyberstalking/bullying against women and children.
Farmers’ suicides
Over 10,700 farmers committed suicide in 2023, 38.5% in Maharashtra and 22.5% in Karnataka. 66.2% of all suicide victims had an annual income below ₹1 lakh.
Fake currency
A total of 3,51,656 fake notes were seized nationwide in 2023, valued at ₹16.86 crore. Delhi recorded the highest number of fake currency cases, particularly ₹2,000 notes. Rajasthan and Assam led in seizure of fake ₹500 notes.
· A total of 4.48 lakh crimes against women were reported, the highest in a decade. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh emerged as the states with the most cases. Common crimes included cruelty by husband/relatives, kidnapping, rape, and molestation.
· 29,670 nationwide, Rajasthan tops with 5,078 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3,516 cases.
- While murder, rape, and robbery have seen an overall decrease, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar reported the highest numbers of murder and kidnapping cases. UP also leads in road accident cases, highlighting safety concerns.
Cybercrime
In 2023, Mumbai ranked first among large cities in online cheating. There were 2,396 such cases registered and 45 cases of online document fraud.
Mumbai ranked second (119 cases) in cyberstalking/bullying of women and children, while Hyderabad was first in this category (163 cases).
Mumbai also ranked second (179 cases) in sexual exploitation via the internet. Bengaluru was first with 374 cases.
In terms of pending cybercrime cases, Mumbai has the highest number with 68,250 registered cases.
Crimes against children
Crimes against children rose by 9.2% to 1.77 lakh cases, the highest increase among vulnerable groups. Madhya Pradesh reported the most cases at 22,393. Kidnapping (45%) and POCSO Act violations (38.2%) were the most prominent.
Most offenders (39,076 of 40,434 cases) were known to the victims.State
