Dense Fog, Snow Disrupt Air Travel and Daily Life Across Northern and Central India

Severe cold, dense fog, and snowfall across northern and central India on Sunday caused major disruptions in air travel and daily activities. At Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, seven flights were cancelled and 36 were delayed due to low visibility, according to the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Airlines, including IndiGo, have issued advisories urging passengers to check flight statuses before leaving for airports.
The AAI warned that early-morning fog could sharply reduce visibility in cities such as Hyderabad, Ranchi, Agartala, Dehradun, Guwahati, and Bhubaneswar, potentially causing sudden flight disruptions. Low-visibility conditions also affected Bhopal and Udaipur. In Leh, heavy snowfall temporarily halted both take-offs and landings, forcing passengers to wait longer at airports.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast persistent dense to very dense fog over the coming days in parts of north, east, and central India. Snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand has intensified the cold wave, while plains in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are experiencing extreme cold and dense fog.

In Madhya Pradesh, visibility in Bhopal dropped below 20 meters, prompting the closure of schools in 18 districts. In Rajasthan, Mount Abu recorded a temperature of zero degrees Celsius for the third consecutive day, with night temperatures remaining below five degrees in seven cities. Uttar Pradesh faced similar conditions, with dense fog reducing visibility to 10 meters in 50 districts, including Jhansi and Gorakhpur, while cold winds blew at 10–15 km/h. Iconic landmarks, such as the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, were barely visible through the fog.
Uttarakhand saw temperatures drop below zero in seven cities, with Munsyari in Pithoragarh recording minus 25 degrees Celsius. Light rain and snowfall are expected in high-altitude districts, including Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh. Bihar also witnessed icy winds and dense fog, with an orange alert issued in 28 districts and school closures up to class 8 in eight districts. The state reported 12 flight cancellations and 14 delays on Sunday, with 16 trains also affected.
The IMD has issued alerts for January 6 and 7, forecasting rain in the plains and heavy snowfall in hilly regions, alongside a continued cold wave in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. Authorities have urged residents to take precautions and allow extra travel time amid challenging weather conditions.
