Female staff forced to prove menstruation at Haryana university: Male supervisors suspended after outrage
Digital Desk
A shocking case of workplace humiliation has emerged from Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak, where four female sanitation workers were allegedly asked by two male supervisors to “prove” they were menstruating
According to reports, the women were forced to partially undress, and photos of their sanitary pads were taken. The incident triggered massive protests on campus, leading to the suspension of both supervisors.
Incident during Governor’s visit
The incident occurred on October 26 — the same day Haryana Governor Asim Kumar Ghosh was visiting MDU. Some female sanitation workers reportedly arrived late to duty that morning.
When supervisors Vinod Kumar and Vitender Kumar questioned them, the women cited “women’s illness,” referring to menstruation. The supervisors allegedly accused them of lying and demanded proof, ordering a female worker to check their undergarments and pads for blood stains.
Protests and chaos on campus
Outraged by the humiliation, the women began protesting. Soon, other sanitation staff and students joined, confronting the accused supervisors. The situation escalated into pushing and shouting until university officials intervened to restore order.
University’s response
Registrar Dr. Krishnakant Gupta and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rajveer Singh reached the spot and immediately suspended both supervisors. They were ordered not to leave Rohtak during the inquiry. Police later detained them for questioning.
An internal Sexual Harassment Inquiry Committee, led by Dr. Sapna Garg (Head of the Chemistry Department), has been formed and asked to submit its report within four days. The registrar also filed a written complaint with the police, requesting an FIR after the internal probe concludes.
Zero tolerance, say officials
Vice-Chancellor Rajveer Singh said the university has a zero-tolerance policy toward such misconduct. “Strict action will follow after the inquiry. Both HKRN supervisors have been suspended,” he confirmed.
Women’s Commissions intervene
Members of the Haryana Safai Karamchari Commission, including Chairman Krishna Kumar and Rohtak Mayor Ram Avtar Valmiki, met the victims, who detailed how the supervisors forced one female worker to inspect their sanitary pads and even photograph them.
The Haryana State Women’s Commission also took suo motu cognisance of the case. Chairperson Renu Bhatia called it an “extremely serious and sensitive matter,” directing the Rohtak SP and the Vice-Chancellor to submit a detailed report within five days under Rule 10(1) of the Haryana State Commission for Women Act, 2012.
Current status
Both supervisors remain suspended, and the inquiry committee is finalising its report. Police are expected to file an FIR once the internal investigation ends. The university has increased security on campus and promised strict disciplinary action against those found guilty
