India’s 2,843-Km Freight Corridor Network Now Fully Operational

India’s 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor network is now fully operational, with over 400 freight trains running daily and faster cargo movement expected.
India has completed its 2,843-kilometre Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network, marking a major milestone in the country's freight and logistics infrastructure. The development follows the inauguration of the final three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Vadodara.
The three newly commissioned sections together cover 326 kilometres and were developed at a cost of more than ₹20,700 crore. Their completion has made the entire 1,506-km WDFC operational, connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT) near Mumbai with Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.
2,843-Km Freight Network
India's DFC network consists of two major corridors: the 1,337-km Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) and the 1,506-km Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The EDFC runs from Ludhiana in Punjab to Sonnagar in Bihar and primarily handles coal and mineral traffic. The WDFC connects JNPT in Navi Mumbai with Dadri near Delhi and is particularly important for containerised freight moving between western ports and northern India.
With the final WDFC sections now operational, the two corridors together form a dedicated freight railway network spanning 2,843 km.
Over 400 Trains Run Daily
Around 426 freight trains are currently operating on the two corridors every day, highlighting the scale of the network's utilisation.
The dedicated tracks allow freight trains to operate separately from passenger services, reducing conflicts on heavily congested railway routes. This separation is expected to improve reliability and enable faster movement of goods across major production centres, ports and markets.
Railway data shows that freight trains operating on DFC routes have recorded an average speed of more than 50 kmph, around twice the average speed of freight trains on the non-DFC network.
Western Corridor Connects Ports
The Western DFC is strategically important because it connects several major western ports with industrial and consumption centres in northern India.
Freight moving through the corridor includes ISO containers from JNPT and Mumbai Port, as well as cargo from Gujarat's Pipavav, Mundra and Kandla ports. The network is also expected to carry fertilisers, foodgrain, salt, coal, iron, steel and cement.
The direct connection to JNPT is particularly significant because it can improve the movement of imported and exported containers between the port and inland markets.
Time and Logistics Costs
One of the primary objectives of the DFC project is to reduce freight transit time and logistics costs.
Because freight trains no longer have to compete for track capacity with passenger trains on these dedicated routes, operators can plan services more efficiently. Faster and more predictable cargo movement can also help industries manage inventories and supply chains.
The corridors are designed to accommodate long freight trains and double-stack containers, further increasing the volume of goods that can be transported by rail.
Rail Freight Share to Rise
The DFC network is also central to India's broader plan to increase the role of railways in freight transportation.
Rail currently accounts for around 27% of the country's freight traffic. Under the National Rail Plan, the government aims to increase this share to 45% by 2030, corresponding to a target of around 3,000 million tonnes of freight movement by rail.
Indian Railways recorded its highest-ever freight loading of 1,670 million tonnes in 2025-26, underlining the growing importance of rail-based logistics.
Boost for Industry and Exports
The completed DFC network is expected to strengthen India's supply-chain infrastructure by improving links between manufacturing centres, agricultural markets, inland container depots and seaports.
For exporters and importers, quicker movement between ports and inland destinations could improve delivery schedules and reduce transportation costs. Industries located away from major ports could also benefit from more predictable freight connectivity.
The project is therefore expected to support manufacturing, trade and India's wider logistics competitiveness.
Next Phase of Freight Expansion
The completion of the two main DFCs also sets the stage for further expansion of India's dedicated freight network.
The Railway Ministry has previously prepared detailed project reports for additional freight corridors, including proposed routes designed to strengthen east-west and coastal connectivity.
The immediate challenge, however, will be ensuring that the completed network is used efficiently and that last-mile connections to ports, industrial areas and logistics hubs keep pace with the main corridors.
With 2,843 kilometres now operational and more than 400 freight trains running daily, India's dedicated freight railway system has entered a new phase. Its long-term success will depend on how effectively the network can shift cargo from congested roads and conventional railway routes to faster, more reliable dedicated freight services.
