Higher rainfall
· The IMD attributed the increased rainfall to active monsoon conditions and western disturbances. This year, India recorded 18 low-pressure systems and 69 system days, compared to the normal 13 systems and 55 days.
· With heavy rains and floods causing loss of life this monsoon, authorities have urged citizens to remain alert during the post-monsoon season, particularly in flood-prone and hilly regions.
Overview
· India’s four-month monsoon season (June-September) ended on Tuesday. The country received 937.2 mm of rainfall, which is 8% above the normal 870 mm. The monsoon arrived early this year on May 24, eight days ahead of the usual June 2 onset.
· According to IMD Chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, post-monsoon rainfall (October–December) is expected to be 15% above normal in most parts of the country.
· Exceptions include some areas in Northwest India, where rainfall may be normal or below normal.
· States likely to see above-normal rain include Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and South Interior Karnataka.
