Justice Suryakant to Take Oath as 53rd CJI on November 24; Chief Justices From Seven Nations to Attend

Justice Suryakant will be sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in a ceremony that will see an unprecedented international judicial presence. For the first time, Chief Justices and Supreme Court judges from seven countries including Brazil, Bhutan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are set to attend, marking a significant moment in India’s judicial diplomacy.

The event follows the completion of CJI DY Chandrachud’s successor CJI BR Gavai’s tenure, which ends on November 23. Justice Suryakant will serve until February 9, 2027, giving him a tenure of nearly 14 months at the helm of the judiciary.

Family members of Justice Suryakant are also expected to attend the ceremony. Relatives from his native Petwar village in Hisar, including his three brothers and their families, will travel to Delhi a day in advance and stay at Haryana Bhawan. His wife, Savita Suryakant, a retired college principal and English professor, and their daughters, Mugdha and Kanupriya, will be present as well.

Justice Suryakant has been part of several landmark rulings during his judicial career. He served on the Constitution Bench that upheld the 2023 abrogation of Article 370 and was part of the bench that ordered the evacuation of Dera Sacha Sauda premises following the 2017 violence. He played a significant role in staying the sedition law and halting new FIRs until a comprehensive review, and he pushed for one-third reservation for women in Bar Associations nationwide.

His notable contributions also include participation in the seven-judge bench that overturned the 1967 AMU judgment, reviving debate on minority status, and involvement in the Pegasus surveillance case by forming a panel to investigate allegations of illegal spying. He has also championed electoral transparency, directing the Election Commission to publish details of 65 lakh names removed from Bihar’s voter list during a revision exercise.

Justice Suryakant’s elevation comes at a time of intense national and international focus on the judiciary, and his tenure is expected to shape several critical constitutional and legal developments.
