Phase voting in Bihar: Phase 1 on 121 seats, Phase 2 on 122 seats

The Election Commission on Monday announced the schedule for the Bihar Assembly elections. Voting will be held in two phases for 243 assembly seats — the first phase on November 6 for 121 seats, including Patna, and the second on November 11 for 122 border constituencies. Counting of votes will take place on November 14, concluding the 40-day election process.

This election will see around 7.42 crore voters, including 14 lakh first-time voters and over 14,000 voters aged above 100. Citizens unable to visit polling stations can cast their votes from home by submitting Form 12 D.

The Election Commission has set up 90,712 polling stations across Bihar, with an average of 818 voters per centre. Of these, 76,801 are in rural areas and 13,911 in urban locations. Webcasting arrangements have been made at all polling stations, and 1,350 model polling stations have been established to provide enhanced facilities for voters.

During a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar stated that Bihar has set up a total of 90,712 polling stations, with an average of 818 voters per centre. Of these, 76,801 are in rural areas and 13,911 in urban locations.

Webcasting arrangements have been made at all polling stations, ensuring 100% coverage. In addition, 1,350 model polling stations have been established to provide enhanced facilities for voters.

Bihar will go to the polls in two phases for the first time in four decades, the last two-phase election having been held in 1985. The BJP and RJD had pushed for a two-phase schedule, while the JDU preferred a single-phase poll.

In the previous elections, voting was spread across multiple phases. In 2020, polling took place in three phases from October 20 to November 7, with results declared on November 10. In 2015, voting was held in five phases between October 12 and November 5, and results came on November 8. The overall election process has gradually shortened over the years — taking 61 days in 2010, 60 days in 2015, and 47 days in 2020. This year’s two-phase schedule will make it the shortest election cycle in over a decade.
