PM Modi Becomes India’s Second Longest-Serving Prime Minister, Surpasses Indira Gandhi
New Delhi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s second longest-serving Prime Minister. With 4,078 days in office, Modi has surpassed former PM Indira Gandhi, who served 4,077 days between January 24, 1966, and March 24, 1977.
The record for the longest continuous tenure is still held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, who served for 6,126 days from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. Modi is now just 2,048 days behind Nehru’s record.
Modi Matches Nehru in Electoral Wins
Modi has equaled Nehru’s feat of winning three consecutive Lok Sabha elections — 2014, 2019, and 2024. If he leads the BJP to another victory in 2029 and completes that term, Modi could become India’s longest-serving Prime Minister ever.
Longest-Serving Elected Leader in India
Beyond the Prime Ministership, Modi now holds the title of India’s longest-serving elected leader, with over 24 years in public office:
- Chief Minister of Gujarat: 2001 to 2014
- Prime Minister of India: 2014 onwards
This makes him the first Indian leader to head an elected government at both state and central levels for more than two decades.
Other Historic Firsts
- First PM born after independence
- First non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as PM
- Longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister in Indian history
BJP Under Modi: Six Straight Wins
Modi has led the BJP to six consecutive major election victories:
- Gujarat Assembly: 2002, 2007, 2012
- Lok Sabha: 2014, 2019, 2024
What’s Next?
With another five-year term underway and a possible 2029 re-election, Modi could rewrite history by surpassing Nehru’s all-time record — an achievement that would cement his place as India’s longest-serving Prime Minister.
