Rajnath Singh Calls for UN Reforms, Warns Nations Against Flouting Global Rules

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for reforms in the United Nations and warned against nations flouting international rules while addressing a major conference of UN Troop Contributing Countries (UNTCC) in New Delhi on Tuesday .

Speaking at the inaugural session of the UNTCC Chiefs' Conclave, Singh stated that some countries are "openly violating international rules," while others are trying to undermine them or "create their own rules and dominate the next century" . He cautioned that such conduct threatens global stability .

Outdated Systems and a Path Forward

Singh argued that current global institutions are ill-equipped to handle modern challenges . "We cannot fight today's challenges with outdated multilateral structures. Without comprehensive reforms, the UN faces a crisis of confidence," he said .

He proposed a "4C" formula—enhanced Consultation, Cooperation, Coordination, and Capacity Building—as a guiding principle for nations to effectively tackle emerging peacekeeping challenges . He also urged technologically and financially advanced nations to provide greater support to peacekeeping missions .

India's Commitment to Peace

Amid the critique, the Defence Minister reaffirmed India's commitment to a rules-based international order and its long-standing role in global peacekeeping . He highlighted that nearly 290,000 Indian personnel have served in over 50 UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, with more than 180 making the ultimate sacrifice.

The three-day conclave, hosted by India for the first time, has brought together senior military leadership from 32 nations .
