Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will undertake a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from September 8 to 10, 2026, with defence cooperation, maritime security and broader bilateral relations expected to be among the key areas of discussion.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Singh will hold consultations with the Sri Lankan leadership during his visit and interact with members of the Indian diaspora in Colombo. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising senior officials from India's Defence and External Affairs ministries.
Defence and Maritime Cooperation in Focus
The visit is aimed at further strengthening the traditionally close India-Sri Lanka relationship, particularly in areas of defence and maritime cooperation.
India and Sri Lanka share a strategically important maritime neighbourhood in the Indian Ocean. Cooperation between the two countries has included military training, exercises, professional exchanges and maritime engagement.
The upcoming discussions are expected to examine ways to deepen this partnership and strengthen cooperation on regional security issues.
Talks With Sri Lankan Leadership
During his stay, Singh is expected to engage with senior Sri Lankan leaders on a range of bilateral and regional issues.
The visit comes as India and Sri Lanka continue to expand cooperation across defence, economic development, trade, regional security and people-to-people ties. The Defence Ministry has described the relationship as one based on longstanding civilisational links and mutual interests.
Recent reports indicate that Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who also holds the defence portfolio, is expected to meet Singh. Discussions are also likely to involve other senior officials responsible for defence and security matters.
Possible Expansion of Defence Engagement
The visit could also provide an opportunity to review and expand ongoing defence cooperation, including training and capacity-building initiatives.
India and Sri Lanka have previously identified areas such as joint exercises, maritime surveillance, defence dialogue, hydrography and training as important components of their security partnership.
Some reports have also suggested that the two sides could discuss new agreements covering defence cooperation and military training. However, the details of any agreements or equipment-related arrangements should be treated as subject to the outcome of the official discussions.
India’s Neighbourhood First Approach
The Defence Ministry has linked the visit to India's broader Neighbourhood First policy and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's MAHASAGAR vision, which focuses on mutual advancement in security and growth across regions.
India has also provided assistance to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis and responded to the island nation following Cyclone Ditwah in 2025, which the government has cited as part of its continuing regional engagement.
Indian Ocean Security
Maritime security remains particularly important because of the two countries' geographical proximity and their location in the Indian Ocean region.
Greater coordination in areas such as maritime surveillance, information sharing, training and disaster-response capabilities could strengthen the ability of both countries to address common security challenges.
Singh's September 8–10 visit is therefore expected to provide an important platform for reviewing the existing defence partnership and identifying areas for deeper cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
