Shinde Faction Pushes for 2.5-Year BMC Mayor Term, Moves 29 Corporators to Taj Hotel

A fresh political deadlock has emerged in Mumbai following the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, as the Shinde faction of Shiv Sena seeks a 2.5-year mayoral term despite the BJP emerging as the single largest party. In a strategic move, Eknath Shinde shifted all 29 newly elected corporators to the Taj Lands End hotel in Bandra, where strict security has been deployed to prevent horse-trading.

The Shinde faction argues that 2026 marks the birth centenary of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray, and the mayor should therefore come from the party for at least half of the BMC term. BJP, having won 89 of Mumbai’s 227 wards, needs the support of the 29 Shinde corporators to cross the majority mark of 114 and secure the mayoral post.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut confirmed that Shinde himself does not want the BJP to assume the mayor’s office, explaining the decision to sequester corporators in a hotel. At the same time, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), which emerged as the second-largest party, has hinted at staking a claim if circumstances allow.

The decision to hold the leadership selection at a hotel draws parallels with the 2022 Shiv Sena split, when Shinde took 39 MLAs to Guwahati amid political upheaval. At that time, the Supreme Court’s Nabam Rebia verdict on rebel legislators helped Shinde consolidate power, eventually leading to Uddhav Thackeray’s resignation and Shinde becoming Maharashtra Chief Minister on 30 June 2022.

Political observers note that the current arrangement is intended to prevent defections and ensure loyalty during negotiations over the mayoral term. All 29 corporators have been instructed to remain at the hotel until 3 pm Wednesday, ensuring collective decision-making.

Meanwhile, internal conflict in Mumbai Congress has intensified following the party’s poor BMC performance. Leaders, including Jagatap, have publicly blamed Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad, prompting the high command to issue show-cause notices amid reports of infighting.

With the BJP poised to form the BMC administration, the Shinde faction’s strategic bargaining could play a decisive role in determining the next mayor. The unfolding scenario highlights the delicate power dynamics in Mumbai municipal politics, with historical splits and alliances continuing to influence outcomes.
