CM Bhajanlal Sharma Says Congress-Era Corruption Undermined MNREGA, Hails VB-G RAMJI Act Reforms

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday said corruption and weak administration during previous Congress governments prevented the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) from achieving its intended objectives. He asserted that the newly introduced VB-G RAMJI Act, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has addressed past shortcomings and introduced reforms aimed at delivering tangible benefits to rural workers.

Speaking at a public interaction in Jaipur, Sharma said the central government had overhauled the employment guarantee framework to ensure transparency, accountability and improved outcomes. “MNREGA failed to reach its full potential earlier because corruption crept into its implementation. The intent was compromised, and workers suffered,” he said, targeting the Congress.

The Chief Minister said the VB-G RAMJI Act-2025 incorporates several new features designed to strengthen rural employment delivery. Among the key changes is the enhancement of the guaranteed employment period from 100 days to 125 days, a move he said would provide greater income security to rural households.

Sharma rejected allegations by the Congress that the Centre would dilute funding support under the new law. He described such claims as “misleading propaganda” and said the revised framework follows the principles of cooperative federalism. “The state’s 40 per cent participation will increase accountability and ensure better monitoring of funds and outcomes,” he said, adding that the Centre remains committed to its financial responsibilities.

Accusing the opposition of spreading confusion, Sharma said Congress leaders were attempting to misrepresent the scheme to regain political ground. “During its tenure, Congress did not focus on delivery or reform. Corruption and inefficiency dominated, and now the same party is trying to mislead people with baseless claims,” he said.

According to Sharma, the new law strengthens administrative mechanisms, improves monitoring and reduces scope for leakages. He said technology-driven oversight and clearer division of responsibilities between the Centre and states would ensure that benefits reach workers directly and on time.

The Chief Minister said the reforms were aimed at restoring faith in public employment programmes and aligning them with current rural needs. He added that the state government would work closely with the Centre to ensure effective rollout and strict enforcement of accountability norms.

Political reactions are expected to intensify as the Congress continues to question aspects of the new framework. However, the state government maintains that the revised law corrects structural flaws of the past and represents a decisive shift toward performance-driven rural welfare.
