JDU MLA Sanjeev Kumar joins RJD: Party alleges he aimed to topple ruling alliance

Bihar Assembly elections, JDU MLA Dr Sanjeev Kumar from Parbatta in Khagaria has switched to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). This move is seen as a major political shift, as he was a key JDU legislator in a crucial seat.

Dr Sanjeev Kumar joined RJD on Friday through a video conference with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav. During the membership ceremony, RJD district president Manohar Kumar Yadav was also present.

Dr Sanjeev had been unhappy with JDU for the past few months. He officially took RJD membership at a function in the campus of Bhagwan High School. Thousands of supporters attended. Tejashwi Yadav could not reach Khagaria due to rain and bad weather.

Dr Sanjeev’s move is a significant loss for JDU in Parbatta. In the 2020 Assembly elections, he had defeated RJD’s Digambar Prasad Tiwari by just 951 votes. Political experts say this could weaken JDU’s hold in the constituency.

JDU national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said in Patna that Dr Sanjeev had decided to join RJD long ago. He had been involved in anti-party activities and had lost support among local workers.

He said over 10,000 supporters attended the Parbatta function on 27 September despite Dr Sanjeev’s absence, showing that local workers were not with him in JDU.

Dr Sanjeev had grown dissatisfied with JDU and NDA. Recently, he organised a Brahmarshi conference in Patna to unite people of his caste. The main reason for leaving the party is believed to be the fear of not getting a ticket in the upcoming elections.

Dr Sanjeev belongs to the Bhumihar community. His joining RJD is seen as a strategic win for Tejashwi Yadav. RJD is trying to expand beyond its traditional MY (Muslim-Yadav) voter base and reach other caste groups.

Dr Sanjeev’s absence from the 27 September worker conference and the 25 September Chief Minister event fueled speculation about his party change

Dr Sanjeev Kumar is known for his outspoken nature. Even while in the ruling alliance, he criticised government policies on farmers’ rights, land disputes, and irregularities in construction projects

Parbatta is traditionally a JDU stronghold. Dr Sanjeev’s father was also an MLA from this seat. His exit will weaken JDU’s local influence. Political analysts say his entry strengthens RJD in Khagaria and nearby constituencies. It could also open new opportunities for RJD among upper-caste voters

Horse-trading inquiry

Before the 2024 NDA government floor test, Dr Sanjeev’s name came up in a horse-trading case. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) investigated the matter. In July 2025, the agency questioned him. His bodyguard was also questioned 22 days ago.
