Lalu Prasad Elevates Tejashwi Yadav as RJD National Executive President, Signals Leadership Transition Ahead of Bihar Polls

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) founder Lalu Prasad Yadav has elevated Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav to the post of National Executive President, marking a decisive step toward a generational shift in the party’s leadership. The decision was taken at the RJD’s national executive meeting held in Patna on January 25, amid preparations for the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections.

Tejashwi Yadav was unanimously elected National Executive President, a role that carries powers similar to those of the national president. Lalu Prasad, citing health reasons, has stepped aside from day-to-day organisational responsibilities but will continue as RJD National President until the end of his term in 2028.

The leadership change was formalised during the party’s national executive meeting at a hotel in Patna on January 25.

Senior party leaders said the decision reflects RJD’s assessment that the party must move beyond its dependence on Lalu Prasad’s image, which opponents continue to associate with the “jungle raj” narrative. With elections approaching, RJD strategists believe Tejashwi represents a more contemporary political face capable of countering sustained attacks from the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Lalu Prasad’s declining health and ongoing legal cases have also limited his political engagement. Convicted in the fodder scam and facing trial in other cases, he has undergone a kidney transplant and multiple medical procedures, significantly reducing his public appearances.

The leadership recalibration follows a series of electoral setbacks where Lalu’s campaign presence failed to deliver results, including defeats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls and key Assembly constituencies. These outcomes reinforced internal concerns that his direct involvement no longer translated into electoral gains.

Alliance dynamics also influenced the move. Congress leaders had shown unease over Lalu’s dominance during seat-sharing negotiations and were reluctant to project Tejashwi as the chief ministerial face early. The eventual announcement came after prolonged talks, reflecting a more cautious approach within the opposition bloc.

Family disputes within the Yadav household further weakened Lalu’s grip on the organisation. Public rifts involving Tej Pratap Yadav and critical statements by Rohini Acharya exposed internal fault lines, prompting senior leaders to push for clearer authority under Tejashwi.

Political analyst Praveen Bagi described the decision as “a necessary transition,” noting that RJD is entering a phase of introspection after successive electoral defeats. “Lalu Prasad no longer has the health or political space to lead from the front. Handing control to Tejashwi was inevitable,” he said.

With enhanced organisational powers, Tejashwi Yadav is now expected to steer RJD’s strategy, rebuild alliances and reshape the party’s public image as it prepares for the next electoral battle in Bihar.
