Chhattisgarh Civic Poll Results 2026: BJP Wins 3 of 5 Nagar Panchayats, Congress Secures 2

The results of the Chhattisgarh civic elections 2026 have largely clarified the political picture at the local level in the state. Counting of votes began on Thursday morning following polling held on June 1 for urban local bodies and three-tier panchayat elections, with results gradually emerging from different districts. Attention remained focused on the results of five Nagar Panchayat president seats, where the Bharatiya Janata Party managed to secure victories in three seats, while Congress succeeded in winning two Nagar Panchayats.

Crowds of party workers and supporters gathered outside counting centers since morning. In several places, the atmosphere kept changing as early trends shifted during counting. It is being said that enthusiasm among voters was higher this time because several newly formed Nagar Panchayats were going to elect representatives for the first time. Voting was conducted for a total of 1,310 vacant posts, including Nagar Panchayat presidents, councillors, sarpanches, panch members and Janpad Panchayat members.

In Sahaspur Lohara Nagar Panchayat of Kabirdham district, BJP registered a comfortable victory. Only the president’s post went to polls here and BJP candidate Sarita Santosh Mishra defeated her nearest rival by a margin of 754 votes. Celebrations reportedly began soon after counting was completed. Locally, this seat was considered important for the party.

A close contest was witnessed in newly formed Ghumka Nagar Panchayat in Rajnandgaon district. Congress candidate Phoolmati Verma won the president election by 85 votes. However, BJP appeared stronger in ward-wise results. Out of 15 wards, BJP-backed candidates won 11 seats while Congress secured only three. One ward was won by an independent candidate.

In Bamhnidih Nagar Panchayat of Janjgir-Champa district, BJP dominance was clearly visible. BJP candidate Ramesh Dadsena won the president’s post and the party also maintained an advantage in ward results. BJP candidates won 11 wards while Congress secured three. Local party workers claimed that development issues and organizational strength worked in their favour.

Shivanandanpur Nagar Panchayat in Surajpur district presented a slightly different picture. BJP-backed candidate Ritesh Jaiswal won the president’s post, but ward results reflected a tight contest. Out of 15 wards, Congress candidates won eight while BJP secured seven. Political observers believe local equations may remain important during council formation.

For Congress, Palari Nagar Panchayat in Balod district brought some relief. Congress candidate Yaanesh Kumar won the president’s election while the party also maintained an edge in ward results. Congress candidates won nine wards whereas BJP secured five. In one ward, both candidates received equal votes, leading to a situation where the winner may now be decided through a draw.

Congress also registered some important victories in urban bypolls. In Ward No. 1, Indira Ward of Jagdalpur Municipal Corporation in Bastar district, Congress candidate Ramkrishna Tiwari won the by-election. The seat had fallen vacant following the death of the previous councillor. Meanwhile, in Bilaspur Municipal Corporation’s Ward No. 29, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Congress candidate Sheikh Azam defeated the BJP nominee and captured the seat.

According to the State Election Commission, the election schedule had been announced in May following which nomination, scrutiny and withdrawal procedures were completed. Voting took place on June 1 and counting is being carried out on June 4. Officials stated that the entire process remained peaceful and additional security arrangements were made at sensitive polling stations.

The panchayat elections also witnessed contests for several important posts. Voting was conducted for 10 Janpad Panchayat member seats, 34 sarpanch positions and 107 panch posts. In rural areas, local development, roads, water supply and village leadership remained major issues during campaigning. Several constituencies reportedly witnessed very close contests.

Voter turnout remained significantly high this time. Urban local body areas recorded nearly 84.58 percent polling, while panchayat regions registered more than 78 percent turnout. Long queues were visible at polling stations from morning till evening on voting day. With results now emerging, political parties have started interpreting the outcome in their own ways and the results are likely to shape local political equations in the coming months.
