Congress and INDIA bloc leaders reviewed their parliamentary strategy after the Opposition claimed it had forced the government to defer several contentious measures during the Monsoon Session.

Opposition Holds Strategy Meet

Senior leaders of the Congress-led INDIA bloc held discussions on the next phase of their parliamentary strategy after the Opposition claimed a political advantage during the recently concluded Monsoon Session. The meeting came amid continuing differences with the government over several contentious legislative and political issues.

Congress has described the Opposition’s performance in the session as a success, arguing that coordinated resistance helped prevent the government from pushing through several measures.

Leaders Assess Session

The discussions focused on coordination among Opposition parties and the issues they plan to pursue outside Parliament after the session ended. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi have been among the key figures involved in coordinating the INDIA bloc’s parliamentary approach.

Floor leaders of the alliance have also held regular meetings during the session to decide common positions on legislation and issues raised in Parliament.

Opposition Claims Political Gain

Congress has portrayed the session as evidence that greater Opposition coordination can pressure the government on contentious legislation. The party claimed that the government was compelled to postpone five proposed bills following resistance from Opposition parties.

Among the issues that generated the sharpest disagreement was delimitation, along with proposed changes linked to the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act. The Opposition has demanded greater scrutiny of the latter and opposed the proposed amendments.

Parliament Witnesses Disruptions

The Monsoon Session ended amid repeated disruptions and protests, with legislative productivity remaining low. According to reports, the Lok Sabha functioned for about 19% of the scheduled time, while the Rajya Sabha recorded productivity of around 39%.

The government and Opposition have traded blame for the disruptions. While Opposition parties argued that the government avoided providing satisfactory answers on major issues, the ruling side accused them of preventing Parliament from functioning normally.

Rahul Gandhi Maintains Pressure

Rahul Gandhi remained one of the most vocal Opposition leaders during the session. He criticised the government's handling of issues including student protests and demanded direct answers rather than what he described as lectures from ministers.

The confrontation intensified during the final days of the session, with senior government leaders also stepping up their criticism of Gandhi and the Opposition.

Alliance Unity Faces Test

Despite claims of coordinated Opposition action, maintaining unity within the INDIA bloc remains a challenge. Different parties have occasionally adopted separate positions in Parliament, highlighting differences in their political priorities.

The DMK, for instance, has followed an independent approach on some parliamentary issues, while its participation in recent Opposition activities has varied. Such differences could complicate attempts to maintain a common strategy over the longer term.

Focus Shifts Beyond Parliament

With Parliament adjourned, Opposition parties are expected to carry several of their campaign issues into the public and political arena. Congress and its allies have previously identified electoral concerns, economic issues, unemployment, inflation and other matters as areas requiring joint action.

The Opposition strategy review is therefore likely to focus not only on parliamentary coordination but also on building a sustained political narrative before the next major legislative and electoral battles. The coming weeks will test whether the INDIA bloc can convert its claimed parliamentary gains into a broader political advantage.
