The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in its second and final chargesheet in the ongoing financial corruption case at the institution. The agency also flagged the alleged involvement of two West Bengal MLAs, identified only as “Members of the Legislative Assembly.”
The chargesheet, filed before the Special CBI Court in Alipore, asserts that Akhtar Ali was involved in corrupt activities at RG Kar long before Sandeep Ghosh assumed charge as Principal. According to CBI sources, Ali allegedly accepted bribes from several vendors while holding his post. Several complaints about his misconduct had reportedly reached Ghosh, who took no action, the agency claims.
“This is a significant development, as the person who had positioned himself as a whistleblower against the former Principal is now shown to have been complicit in corruption for years,” said a CBI official familiar with the case.
The chargesheet details that Akhtar Ali conspired with arrested vendors Biplab Singh and Suman Hazra, along with co-accused Sasikanta Chandak, to carry out financial irregularities. Chandak has also been charged with forging signatures, while Ali’s actions are described as having been carried out “with his hand inside the gloves of former Principal Sandeep Ghosh.”
Additionally, the CBI has indicated the role of two unnamed MLAs in forwarding an application for securing a five-year café contract at RG Kar, which allegedly contained a forged signature. No further details about the lawmakers have been disclosed.
The development casts a complex light on the corruption allegations at RG Kar, raising questions about the credibility of whistleblowers and the extent of political involvement in institutional misconduct. The case is expected to be heard in detail during upcoming sessions of the Special CBI Court.
This chargesheet marks a significant escalation in the investigation, which has already drawn widespread media attention and public scrutiny over alleged systemic corruption at one of Kolkata’s premier medical institutions.
