The BJP and Samajwadi Party have intensified their outreach to women voters in Uttar Pradesh, with competing welfare proposals taking centre stage ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.

Welfare Battle Takes Shape

The political contest for UP women voters has intensified nearly a year before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, with the BJP and Samajwadi Party moving towards competing welfare pitches aimed at women.

The latest round of political sparring centres on direct financial assistance. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has promised Rs 40,000 annually to women if his party returns to power, while the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government is considering a new cash-assistance scheme for women, according to recent reports.

Akhilesh Announces Rs 40,000

Yadav first announced the Samajwadi Party's annual Rs 40,000 assistance promise in late 2025. He has since repeated the commitment while presenting women as a central part of the party's political strategy.

The SP chief has linked the proposal to his broader PDA framework and described women, or “aadhi abaadi”, as a key constituency. The party has also spoken about economic independence and welfare support for women across age groups.

BJP Weighs Cash Assistance

The BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government is now examining a possible financial assistance programme for women ahead of the election. Recent reports have referred to a proposed payment of Rs 20,000, while other reports have indicated that a larger scheme could be under consideration.

The proposal has not yet become an implemented government scheme. The reported discussions have nevertheless triggered a political exchange between the BJP and SP, putting women-focused welfare back at the centre of UP politics.

Yadav Attacks BJP Move

Yadav has criticised the reported BJP proposal and compared it with the SP's Rs 40,000 annual commitment. He has argued that the BJP's reported assistance would fall short of what his party has promised.

The SP leader has also questioned the timing of the proposed scheme, portraying it as an attempt to counter the Samajwadi Party's welfare pitch before the 2027 polls. The BJP, meanwhile, has challenged the SP's claims and defended its broader record of welfare delivery.

Women Emerge As Key Bloc

Women have become an increasingly important electoral constituency in Uttar Pradesh and across several Indian states. Political parties have expanded schemes involving cash transfers, subsidised services, housing, cooking fuel, healthcare and livelihood support as they compete for women's votes.

The BJP has built a substantial welfare outreach around schemes such as Ujjwala, housing and financial inclusion, while the SP is seeking to combine its traditional social coalition with a stronger women-focused economic message.

2027 Polls Drive Outreach

The competing promises come well ahead of the next Assembly election, giving both parties time to shape their campaign narratives. Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, will elect a new Assembly in 2027.

The political importance of women has also grown as parties increasingly track turnout and voting behaviour among female electors. Analysts have pointed to women as a decisive constituency in recent elections, making targeted welfare commitments an important part of campaign planning.

Bigger Political Contest Ahead

The welfare competition is unlikely to remain limited to cash assistance. Both parties are expected to raise issues involving employment, education, household expenses, safety, healthcare and economic opportunities for women as the election approaches.

For the BJP and Samajwadi Party, the immediate contest is over who can present a more credible women-focused welfare agenda. Whether the promises translate into electoral support will depend on implementation, affordability and voters' assessment of each party's record. The intensifying battle for UP women voters is therefore set to remain a prominent feature of Uttar Pradesh politics ahead of the 2027 election.
