Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, sworn in for a record 10th term on Thursday, expanded his cabinet with 26 ministers, including 10 new faces. Notably, Deepak Prakash, son of RLSP chief Upendra Kushwaha, was inducted as a minister without contesting elections. He is neither an MLA nor MLC and must secure an MLC seat within six months to continue in office.
The cabinet also includes Ramkripal Yadav, a former MP and ex-Minister of State in PM Modi’s cabinet, who recently won the Danapur assembly seat. Three women—Leshi Singh, Rama Nishad, and Shreyasi Singh—were among the new inductees, representing 11% of the cabinet. Shreyasi Singh, a national-level shooter and BJP MLA from Jamui, has been inducted for the first time, while Rama Nishad secured her Chainpur seat in her debut election. Leshi Singh, a six-time MLA from Dhamdaha, continues to hold the Food and Consumer Protection portfolio.
The BJP contributed seven first-time ministers, including Sanjay Singh Tiger, Arun Shankar Prasad, Rama Nishad, Lakhendra Kumar Roshan, Shreyasi Singh, Narayan Prasad, and Pramod Chandravanshi. LJP-R members Sanjay Kumar and Sanjay Singh were also inducted.
Veteran leaders retained their positions, includingof Bankipur and Bijendra Prasad Yadav of Supaul, who has served as a minister since 1990. Nitish Kumar’s cabinet demonstrates a mix of experience and new representation, including young leaders, women, and members from backward communities, signaling efforts to balance political experience with broader electoral appeal.
Prem Kumar has been appointed Bihar Assembly Speaker for the ninth consecutive term, following a JDU-BJP consensus. The cabinet expansion underscores Nitish Kumar’s strategy of consolidating allies, rewarding loyalty, and incorporating emerging leaders to strengthen governance and political stability in the state.
