Ashtami-Navami 2025: Divine celebrations begin Tomorrow
Digital Desk
Sharad Navratri reaches its pinnacle with Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami, commencing on September 30 with sacred rituals and festivities across India. Observed from September 29 at 4:31 PM until September 30 at 6:06 PM, Ashtami honors Goddess Mahagauri, while Navami from September 30 at 6:06 PM to October 1 at 7:02 PM reveres Goddess Siddhidatri.
Significance of Durga Ashtami
Durga Ashtami, the eighth day of Navratri, celebrates Goddess Mahagauri, symbolizing purity and compassion. Devotees believe worshipping Mahagauri cleanses sins and brings spiritual renewal. The auspicious color for this day is peacock green, and puja materials include white flowers, coconut, and sweets. Chanting the mantra “Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah” is said to bestow divine blessings.
Kanya Puja Tradition
A highlight of Ashtami is Kanya Puja, where nine young girls (ages 2–10) represent the nine forms of Durga. The first puja window runs from 5:00 AM to 6:12 AM, and the second from 10:40 AM to 12:10 PM. After washing the girls’ feet, devotees apply tilak, offer new clothes or gifts, and serve halwa-poori with chickpeas, seeking blessings in return.
Spiritual Essence of Maha Navami
On Navami, worship focuses on Goddess Siddhidatri, the granter of supernatural powers and wisdom. The revered Sandhi Puja—performed during the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and first 24 minutes of Navami—marks Goddess Durga’s victory over Mahishasura, and is believed to yield immense spiritual merit.
Rituals and Observances
Devotees observe fasts to invite mental peace and positive energy. Morning ablutions and wearing fresh attire set a pure tone. Elaborate pandal aartis and devotional bhajans fill the evening air, fostering community spirit and cultural unity.
Preparing for Vijayadashami
Ashtami-Navami’s culmination leads to Vijayadashami on October 2, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. Iconic Ravan Dahan ceremonies and idol immersions signify the close of Navratri. Believers emerge with renewed faith, health, and prosperity, empowered by Goddess Durga’s blessings during these sacred days.
