The rare alignment allows devotees to perform Pradosh Puja during the evening and continue with the sacred Shivaratri night vigil dedicated to Lord Shiva.

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi (13th lunar day) of Krishna Paksha, while Masik Shivaratri begins with the Chaturdashi Tithi later the same night.

Immediately after the conclusion of Trayodashi, Chaturdashi Tithi begins at 10:30 PM on July 12 and continues until 6:50 PM on July 13, marking the observance of Masik Shivaratri.

The most sacred worship period, known as Nishita Kaal, falls between:

  • 12:11 AM and 12:54 AM on July 13

Other night worship timings include:

  • First Prahar: 7:12 PM – 9:52 PM

  • Second Prahar: 9:52 PM – 12:32 AM

  • Third Prahar: 12:32 AM – 3:13 AM

  • Fourth Prahar: 3:13 AM – 5:53 AM

The Shivaratri Parana, or conclusion of the fast, can be performed on July 13 between 5:53 AM and 6:50 PM.

Significance of Pradosh Vrat

Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is observed twice every month. Hindu scriptures state that worshipping Lord Shiva during the evening twilight, known as Sandhyakaal, is believed to bring peace, prosperity, good health, and spiritual growth.

According to traditional beliefs, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are especially pleased during Pradosh, making it an auspicious time to seek divine blessings and the fulfillment of wishes.

Since this year's observance falls on Sunday, it is known as Bhanu Pradosh Vrat, which is traditionally associated with prayers for longevity, well-being, and inner peace.

Rituals Followed by Devotees

Devotees usually begin the day with a ritual bath and observe either a complete fast or consume only fruits and milk. During the evening, Lord Shiva is worshipped through Abhishekam using water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee.

Bilva leaves, flowers, fruits, incense, and lamps are offered to the Shiva Lingam while devotees chant "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Reading the Shiva Purana, Pradosh Vrat Katha, or participating in temple prayers also forms an important part of the observance.

Importance of Masik Shivaratri

Masik Shivaratri is observed every month on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi and is regarded as an opportunity for spiritual discipline and self-reflection. Devotees remain awake through the night, offering prayers during the four Prahars and meditating during Nishita Kaal, which is considered the most powerful period for Shiva worship.

Religious texts associate the monthly observance with purification of the mind, reduction of karmic burdens, and strengthening devotion to Lord Shiva.

With Pradosh Vrat and Masik Shivaratri falling consecutively this year, temples across the country are expected to witness large gatherings of devotees participating in special prayers, Rudrabhishek rituals, and night-long bhajans.
